Well then I guess you just don't know that the Flyers are retooling and not rebuilding, are interested in Petry and want out of the JVR contract. These are all reasons the Flyers make this trade. Also there are reports of a rift between Ellis and management (not sure how true they are but it is reported none the less)

I don't see that either, why would Vancouver trade Miller (who they are trying to resign long-term) for a guy they know they aren't going to resign for more than 2 years?

Yes it would be better for the Flyers to go after Miller but the Canucks are trying to resign him and likely get it done.

The main thing is the 5th OA pick, for a guy we DO NOT want in Petry, rumors have been around forever surrounding this guy to the Flyers, IT WILL NEVER HAPPEN. And we can easily dump JVR for less value than having to take on a contract of another 20 goal scorer, which we have several. We need an elite goal scorer and if we are going to trade the 5th OA, it will go towards acquiring that. Stop with this nonsense.

The Chicago guys keep peddling DeBrincat. The fifth overall and DeBrincat are nice elements of a reasonable exchange.

I think it's cause they know he's more of a 25/30 goal scorer unless he's playing with an elite talent like Kane, who most teams don't have. Also entering a rebuild, the 5th OA, it helps.
