Seeing as this is your first post. I will be nice.

The Rangers trade albeit making hockey sense, does not provide benefit to the red wings organizationally. I’ll hard pass on taking Trouba’s $8m salary for the next 4 years off the books for New York. You got probably get him from them for a 5th round pick, since he’s still a decent player but you’d be doing them a favor by taking $32m off their cap.

As for the Edmonton trade: To me, there isn’t much difference between Zadina & Puijujarvi, aside from one of them was playing alongside the best player in the world for the past few years. He’s an underwhelming player despite his clear talent. A guy I would prefer to stay far away from, especially if he’s going to cost more than Filip (which he is).

The Toronto deal: Liljegren is a decent player, and so is Kerfoot, but neither of those players make the Redwings better than they were with Hronek. The fact that we’re retaining salary on Hronek for multiple years makes it twice as worse.

If anything, I have no issue moving Hronek, who in my opinion has a 1st round pick value, so retaining 50% salary requires another 1st round pick from a desperate cap strapped team like the Leafs. I’d look for a similar return the Blackhawks got for Brandon Hagel.

Vegas: We didn’t give up anything outrageous in that deal however, Martinez is a guy who I think Vegas will have difficulty unloading and Hague is a good player. If acquiring Hague means having to take Martinez too, I think the Wings should pass.

And as for the FA signing of Nichuskin; if we’re going to spent close to $8m for a player, the money would be better spent on Filip Forsberg or John Klingberg or better yet, go sign two $4m players instead of trading assets for a bunch of them.

I’m looking forward to your next try.

Nice D-core rebuild, but I feel like some of these moves blocks a pathway for Wallinder, Johansson and McIsaac etc. Leafs might as well just keep Liljegren based on this deal too.

That’s funny. You guys are close to paying someone to take Trouba. Might not be this year, but if he’s still there in a year or two, you’re attaching draft pick compensation to take his deal off the books.

To what question? But I do agree Toronto shouldn't trade Liljegren.

There is at least another season before Trouba will waive for any team. I'm more interested in seeing Edvinsson with Seider.

I like what what you tried to do, but you have contracts coming up for Larkin in one year and Seider, Raymond and Vrana in two years and you ate up a lot of cap.

Thanks a lot for the feedback.

My thought process for the defense was to get a strong defensive partner for each of our young defensemen (Seider, Edvinsson and in this case Liljegren). Hronek is better than Liljegren but my concern is I don't think he would be the best partner for Edvinsson's development as his defensive game can use some improvements.

Agreed Leafs should keep Liljegren, I just like his game. My offer was to hedge bets for the leafs in cap savings in case they were worried he would get a strong offersheet in the 3.5-4M dollar range this year (worth down the line just probably not next season).

As for Puljujarvi, his main draw is he's stronger on the boards then Zadina. The red wings current roster has a lot of smaller players in the top 6 so my goal with the forwards were to get some strong forecheckers who could throw in the occasional goal.

For the Martinez trade i misread his contract. Tired eyes saw 3+ mil instead of 5+. In that case i'd just trade for or offershet Hague and bring back Staal instead.

As for Nichusken i overpaid to justify the contract length of 4 years instead of 7 years (he'd be 32 so we'd get the prime years). This may be a pipe dream though.

I think Johansson has a chance next year in which case he can join the 3rd pair (in place of Martinez or Staal)

Agreed on Trouba as I believe his wife/gf is still in residency. This is mainly a pipe dream. As for Edvinsson I didn't want to throw him on the first pair right away. He's probably our best options right now but not sure if that'd be best for his development long term.

The Larkin contract i figured was okay with the expiration of Suter, Kerfoot, Erne and Sundqvist after year 1. In year 2 Martinez would expire, hopefully some of our prospects would have filled in the empty forward spots the year before and that's when the cap is supposed to start increasing significantly again. Worst case scenario I don't believe the other existing contracts would be super hard to move for future assets.

Agreed for the most part. If he does get a $3-4M offersheet, what would the plan be though?

Yeah no. Trouba’s pretty coveted around the league. He’d get more than Risto but less than Seth Jones. Essentially what we paid to get him.

He sure is boss. Not a lot of guys in the “RHD, 6-2 and up, under 30 years old, with more than a couple years of term left, putting up 1+ point/60 mins production” tier.

It’s Ekblad, Trouba, Hamilton, Parayko, Seth Jones.

That’s it. all pretty heavily coveted. And honestly Trouba perhaps more than another name or 2 on that list because his contracts half paid off and he’s only signed through age 33 not 35-36 so you don’t get Burns/Suter type regression.

Though it’s understandable that folks on a cap site would quibble over small cap differences, it’s just not entirely realistic.
