I thought we were done with this

Description
For some reason Wilson/Nylander swaps have become really popular again. I think there is zero chance that this happens, but I wanted to go through with what it would take for the Caps to make that trade worthwhile.

1) Whether Wilson or Nylander is better is besides the point. In the eyes of the league -- coaches, pro scouts, and gms -- Wilson is the more valuable player because of the exact reasons Leafs fans want to trade for him.

2) This swap would only come about because TOR is specifically targeting Wilson / trying to dump Nylander. The Caps would not be initiating any deal involving Wilson.

3) The Caps are still going to be going for a cup. Good bottom 6 forwards and bottom pairing defenseman on cheap contracts that fit well with the team are things that you want to keep. This means Sheary, Hathaway, Dowd, Jensen, and TVR in particular would only be moved in a massive overpay, not as throw-ins.

4) This also means that young players that have proven themselves on the roster and that management has said will need to play big roles will not be moved. Fehervary and McMichael are off the table, but Samsonov and Vanecek are very much not.

5) All futures -- prospects not expected to immediately contribute next year and picks -- are completely fair game.

These combined lead to one outcome. TORONTO WOULD BE ADDING IN A WILSON/NYLANDER SWAP. I am tired of seeing Wilson + Hathaway + 2nd + 2nd for Nylander + Mrazek. Stop. Please.

Sorry man, Leafs pass. Not close to worth it with the additions. Best WSH gets is straight up with a future 2nd or 3rd

Like I said I think there is 0 chance this ever happened, and as a Caps fan even this version would have me on the fence about whether it was the right move. But this is at minimum what it would take for the caps to seriously consider it

Not happening, there's no way Tom Wilson is waiving for Toronto. He wont even be playing until February at the earliest anyways. So this would be more of a Trade Deadline move.

I couldn't agree more. All the more reason I should not be seeing any more Wilson/Nylander swaps in Toronto ACGMs

These kind of claims are always hilarious. Talking to a lot of coaches, pro scouts and GMs, are you?

I feel pretty confident in a league where Chiarot, Foligno, Savard, Coleman, and Goodrow returned first round picks, this is the case. You're getting a big body who scores, hits, protects his teammates, provides veteran leadership, and is a stanley cup winner! He's even been to an all-star game, something Nylander hasn't

So its your opinion .... which you are trying to appeal to authority without having any basis to do it, to reinforce. Gotcha.

What is this forum except posting our baseless opinions lol. Disagree with it all you want, but I do not think it is an unreasonable claim to make.

There's a reason why Slafkovsky going 1st overall has gained momentum, and not one single mention of Cooley taking the top spot... If you haven't realized by now that most coaches, pro scouts, and GMs covet size, you aren't paying enough attention.

As a Leafs fan, I can fully explain, in great detail, why so many Leafs fans propose this trade:

We're idiots.

I trust this clarifies things moving forward.

I guess Slafkovsky must have grown a few inches this season and it wasn't the fact his play was improved?

I would sure hope not. Because that would disprove everything I've said about Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton being nhl management masterminds.

It's not educating. You are suggesting the only thing. or even the primary thing, they covet is size which is obviously false.

No foundation for saying GM prefer size and physicality over skill? Sure there is. Why do you think a lot of the big overpayment contracts are for guys like Lucic, Nurse, Kassian, Clarkson, etc (tough guys). While Nylander is the better player than Wilson, saying Wilson is more coveted by NHL gms is a very reasonable statement.

Again, the highest paid guys in the league are usually compensated fairly in relation to their skill. While the bigger, stronger, more physically imposing players are mostly overpaid because they seem to be coveted by who the OP suggested... If you take a second to think about it instead of just shooting back a snarky remark, it's actually not that complex a theory to wrap your head around

That's just an example, that's not the point. If you don't like that example, you could look at the draft. Many times teams reach for players with size and let small players fall. That's why late round stars are almost always small guys (Point, Gaudreau, Pavalski, etc).

It's common knowledge that NHL gms prefer big players over small players in a vaccuum. Like obvoiusly if the small player is way better then you take him, but if they are similar players other than size, the GM take the big guys every time. Well, except maybe Dubas haha.
