Buddy, this is a laughable offer for petry

At this point, if their trade partner truly ends up being Detroit, I really do believe Hughes pulls the trigger and sends Petry back home for a 2nd like proposed above. I don't see this as a hill worth dying on to be perfectly frank.

This would be in good faith and show the rest of the league that MTL is truly under new management and considers where their players/ex players would like to play. Nothing bad can come from selling off a tad bit short on a guy who is clearly looking to create a better situation for his family. It would be the honourable thing to do by Kent and crew

Agreed, but he wants out. His family doesn't want to live in Canada, and believe it or not, but some GM's actually do like to take players lives into consideration. Sometimes the best business decision long term is to make a bad business decision in the short term, if that makes any sense.

Aging, yes. As is every player for that matter. But In your own words, I would love to hear how he's declining.

He was total garbage under Ducharme, It wasn't until Marty Saint Louis came in that he started playing like his old self. And then he gets injured once again and pretty much hurts his chance. but yeah he was definitely declining there. he only started playing like his old self once the season was lost.

So your opinion is based on the fact that he played bad under a coach that had multiple players, if not the entire team as a whole, playing at their absolute worst for 30 some odd games?

I'm just saying that unless a miracle happens and Detroit gets Barry Trotz as our HC, I don't see Petry thriving in Detroit he'll probably be even worse and it's just too much of a risk on a young rebuilding club.

That's definitely a fair point. But calling a guy who had a bad 30game start to one of the most injury riddled NHL seasons in league history, declining, doesn't seem to cut it

Declining isn't out of the realm of possibilities, He's 34 going to be 35 in early December players do start to decline in their mid 30's some even sooner than that.

I'd say the OP's offer isn't about what is fair or what Petry's worth is, it's about the situation the Habs are in and their bargaining power. Yzerman's far too responsible to give up better assets for 6 million year-old guy on $6 million per year. Some other idiot GM might...they might even extend him eh?

We don't need Petry period, We're getting younger not older. Let Dallas or whoever have Petry he's not worth what he's getting paid.

you cant just stick a bunch of rookies out there. detroit needs experience.

ACGM loses all credibility and is immediately branded to homer nonsense when you have Hronek showing a bigger return than Petry.

If you actually think any of the other 30 clubs wouldn’t rather have Petry in their lineup game 1 in 2022 besides teams tanking like Arizona, Chicago then you can’t be trusted

A 2nd rounder is just such bad asset management though. I get the optics but it’s an insane price when you see what other RHD like Jones and Risto got in the last year. Petry is better than both of them. Even Toews got 2 2nds and that’s known as a massive underpayment, where the Isles had cap issues. look at this thread where he’s randomly brought into the equation. Habs should be able to sit on Petry.

If you think a 34 year old Petry is worth as much as a 27 year old Toews you’re nuts

This makes as much sense as saying Seth Jones is better than Toews because he got a better return.

wings pay more for petry.

Petry is 34-37 makes over 6 and EVERYONE knows he wants the hell out of Montreal. More importantly his WIFE wants the hell out of Montreal. Canadiens fans consider yourselves lucky if you get a second especially if there's no retention

they are all 27 not 34 Toews and Ritso make less. Taking that 2 if offered ( personally i wouldn't ) would probably be in Montreals best interest.

We will see. No one knows the exact circumstances. We dont know the relationship between Hughes-Petry. Maybe Hughes just isnt a fan. Maybe Hughes wants to put his stamp on the team and do business the right way. Taking the short return to, maybe, give a good impression to other players whom are thinking of Montreal as an option and want to see management be proactive. These news GMs are wild cards, sometimes.

Hughes has done a fantastic job, and while a 2nd would be ok considering the circumstances. They have 14 picks this year so most likely it would be a 2023 2nd. Right now, it's really hard to digest a 2nd when Kulak got a 2nd, Leddy got a 2nd for crying out loud, twice, in the past year. Leddy is cooked by every metric. ppl are paying for what he was. Petry is in his prime at 34 with 4 seasons of 40 plus points and just finsihed very strong with 56 point pace to finish with MSL in final 30 games.

These RHD and especially a top4 go for a premium. Risto is younger and has his detractors but it just took one GM to overpay so I don't see why Hughes cant find a team out of Jeff's no trade list that will pay just a fair price. If it's absolutely needed move for the dressing room and must be done before camp, then so be it but if this isn't a rush job then there is zero reason why Jeff wouldnt get the standard 1st rounder, prospect and roster player. He's still very good, 3 years is reasonable length at 34. Letang at 35 years of age is better than ever coming off career highs! I dont take age into consideration as much as trajectory. Jeff much like Letang is still strong. A guy like Leddy at 32 as been down the last 4 years.

i'm not giving that for a 34 yo(no longer "prime" age) especially one who is making 6+through age 37 nor do I think Yzerman is either. Good luck to you.
