Marino to Columbus

Description
Marino to columbus makes a lot of sense for a few reasons in my opinion. Columbus already has a 1st round pick ahead of this one (and I believe they had 3 last year) so they could get someone there and get marino who would be a guaranteed good player, his floor is higher than anyone who they would be drafting. In this retool columbus is drafting so many prospects that it would be nice to have a player where you know what you are getting and can contribute right away. Marino would be a great partner and distributor for Werenski and would allow Boqvist to play 2nd pairing so as to not rush his development. This would be assuming they take Gauthier or some other forward with their first pick. Pitt may not want to trade marino in division but perhaps the benefit outweighs this risk in managements opinion.

This trade is good for pitt because it allows them to get Mateychuk without giving up 21OA. A common trade on here is between ottawa and pitt and it is 7th OA for Marino + 21 OA so I figured when acquiring 12th OA pitt would not be required to move 21 OA (12 OA, and this trade, were specifically chosen not to give NYI the chance to get mateychuk at 13).

Now just the question of who to take at 21? You probably want a center. Jiri Kulich being wishful thinking and Nathan Gaucher being the more likely option. Rutger McGroarty is also intriguing if managment decides none of the centers are worth taking,

They could bring heinen back to play where nylander is but I think they might let one of the WBS kids (puustinen, nylander, poulin) compete for a roster spot, with O'connor/zohorna being automatically given a seperate spot.

Van likes Kapanen, but says no to this particular deal. Canucks need cap space and a deeper prospect pool, don't need to remove a pick just to have to spend more money on Kapanen. Could see more of Dickinson and a 3rd for Kapanen, a 4th and a 7th?

Only other forward I could think of is Pearson, and while he isn't either fanbase's favourite player, he does have his value

A couple contracts might be a bit high but overall one of the few rational posts on this site…
As PIT I wouldn’t be so quick to move on from Marino unless 1-Letang resigns and 2-you have a viable replacement lined up…

Thanks! Well this trade would obviously have to happen before FA so you can't have someone "lined up", but I think there are enough RD options for Hextall to sleep confortably at night. I would be willing to overpay on manson based on the way he is playing.

I suppose you are referring to copp being too high?

I think someone would give just a pick for Kapanen, without wanting to move salary out, if Vancouver won't since he is RFA. Pitt really could use a mid round pick after giving multiple up in the trade I made and does not want to pay Pearson 3.25

Pearson is well worth his 3.25M cap hit. If you disagree, then you clearly haven't watched the player enough

I suppose I haven't watched the player enough then haha. It was more about being able to pay someone else less than about pearson not being worth his cap hit though. Look at the bottom 6 on this team. Pearson would have to replace Alex Nylander and that would put us over the cap

I don’t want to break up the party here but…Jarmo would not make that trade. Marino is a decent defenseman but Jarmo would much rather play the long game with the picks. Jarmo himself said, of course paraphrasing it, that he would not move either of the 1st round picks unless they were for truly special players that can be here for 10 years or so. Marino just doesn’t fit that. I could see the Jackets sending a 2nd and a prospect for Marino but not a 1st.

Marino just turned 25 last month and has 5 years on his contract at $4.4 mil. That's definitely a potential 10 year player imo and with the 2nd and 3rd round picks that are also included this is a pretty solid deal for 12th OA. It would really depend on whether or not Jiricek is there at 6th OA though. If they take him it would be a bit of RD overkill with Marino, Boqvist, Peeke, Blankenburg, Ceulemans and Jiricek all in the system at once.

The problem with having 6 first round picks over three years (last year, this year, next year) is that some of those picks may not work out. If it were me I wouldn’t want to put all my eggs in one basket when I can get some tangible asset in Marino where I know what I’m getting. As for the player himself he is a defensive minded two way defensemen who has a great first pass and is a pretty strong skater. The problem with him is that he hesitates in the offensive zone and lacks the confidence to be overly aggressive, to a fault at times. This wouldn’t be as much of a problem if his D partner was switched from Marcus Pettersson to Zach Werenski. Marino wouldn’t be expected as much on offence, but he would still contribute offensively in the right moments. Playing with such an offensively gifted player in werenski would give him the confidence to make that pinch or try something creative ( as we know he has the potential to do these things based on his rookie year ) in the right spot.

On the other hand, when everyone but Werenski is under 21 years old and still learning, there’s no balance. We saw that this last season. It’s okay to flip futures for guys a few years older who are already over most of their growing pains, especially as the core starts to gel. If the 12th were the Jackets’ only pick this year I’d say no, don’t trade it. But they have the sixth, too.

I agree that getting someone established is a good idea. They just need to make sure that whoever they trade one of those picks for it would be someone they don't regret getting even if that pick becomes a legit NHLer. Marino could certainly be a player that fits that description.

I think there is also merit to the idea of hedging your bets with more high picks though. The only one of their 4 previous 1sts that looks to be well on his way to being an NHLer is Sillinger. Johnson, Chinakhov and Ceulemans are a long way from bust territory and are all trending in the right direction, but having 5 maybes instead of 3 maybes wouldn't be a terrible thing.

To be honest, guys like Jenner, Bjorkstrand and Gavrikov have kind of become the future older vets that will be the supporting cast if/when the younger group takes over the team's key positions. They'll be around 32, 30 and 30 respectively when the youth should be fully ready to compete. Elvis's position with the team when it hopefully reaches contender status is a bit up in the air considering how highly Tarasov is thought of. Laine and Werenski are right in the upper end of the youth group. They'll probably be around 27 and 28 when the team should be really hitting it's stride.
