Florida is just going to give Toronto a 30 goal scorer and a goalie who started 50+ games for a 3rd?

That Bob trade wouldn’t work for any team. $5 mil retained for 4 years? I don’t think any reasonable GM would even consider that trade.

If they're desperate enough, why not? They have Knight in the wings, and he's better, so why hold onto a 10 million back up? The panthers screwed themselves with that contract.

No, the rest of the league is laughing at that horrendous contract. Florida would be over the moon to make a trade to get rid of it.

Yeah, but $5 million retained? For any contender, that’s insane. That’s enough to get Ondrej Palat, Reilly Smith, or to pay Malkin. Besides, to lose Duclair on that contract? At that point, they just buy him out and take the consequences.

5 million dollars retained man? For a 3rd that's a bad deal. They don't even get the good cap relief and loose their 30+ goal scorer. This deal needs them to retain only 2 million or less for it to work

But why would teams, especially a divisional rival in this case, help out Florida? They are the reigning Presidents trophy winner and teams around the league don't want to pull off a trade to make them better, which this would do. They're clearing 8 million in cap space in the trade and not getting a bad contract in return. So the trade is more balanced than it appears.

That's the conundrum that Florida put themselves in. I don't see teams acquiring an 8 million goalie. It has to be retained by half for teams to decide to take the plunge and bring in Bob, who hasn't been playing like a Vezina caliber goalie since he signed the contract.

Duclair is still good value so I'm sure they would rather keep him than that extra 3 million dollars

Flordia gets a better deal somewhere else where they aren't getting screwed (Arizona, Seattle,Ottawa even)

My point is that it doesn’t have to be retained by Florida. Maybe Arizona or Buffalo, but not Florida.

Someone else floated this idea the other day and it's just. not. happening.

You literally think that Toronto is going to get Florida to retain 4x$5M, & send you a 30 goal scorer with a sweetheart 2x$3M deal, just so they can "dump" Bobrovsky and get a late 3rd round pick back?

First strike: name me a team that has ever retained *that* much money for *that* much term. Know why you can't really find one? It's because it'd be easier to just buy him out and absorb a *slightly* larger cap hit if they really want to get his deal off the books - $5.75M this year, then 3x$6.75M in years you assume the cap goes up by at least $1M, then 4x$1.75M - not ideal in terms of the length but makes more sense than adding Duclair - I'd rather have the 30 goal scorer this year and next and pay an extra $750K/$1.75M then send him away to save those hits.

Second strike: why would Florida be so desperate to get rid of him? He put up a .913 SV%, 2.67 GAA, and 8.6 GSAA this season. He also led Florida to their first playoff series win since *1996*. Wouldn't it look bad to your fanbase if you jettison the goalie who helped bring you there as soon as possible, in addition to giving up one of your top scoring wingers with him? I'd have to assume that Florida wants to keep contending and Spencer Knight doesn't look fully ready for primetime yet (.908, 2.79 GAA, 0.5 GSAA) - he's still only 20, so that's fine! Give him another year of not having the carry the full weight of the team and let him grow into the role instead of just shoving it on him before he's good to go. If this year's playoffs have taught us anything, having a solid backup is incredibly important and as long as Knight is on his ELC I can't see the Panthers being super desperate to dump Bob.

Third strike: Bob's got a full NMC! Even if Bill Zito suffered some traumatic brain injury that made him thing it was good business to retain 4x$5M so he can trade his starting goalie & a 30 goal scorer for a 3rd round pick, Bob will make sure it doesn't happen by staying in sunny southern Florida and vetoing this deal.

Bonus strike: Look, you know that you're not getting a free 30 goal scorer, right? So if you want to spend 4x$5M on a goalie with numbers like, that, why don't you sign Jack Campbell (.914, 2.64 GAA 10.0 GSAA) and get the same production from a guy 4 years younger (and 4 years further away from his decline).

Yes, it is crazy to retain that much money, but you all need to freaking chill. That is what KYPER said he is hearing. KYPER. Not the Author. KYPER. THAT is what's being reported. It's not the author of this post pulling it out of his ***. So when you people comment on these things, you need to do some research and chill on the author lol. Some of you on here, man lol

It has already been reported by very reliable NHL reporters that Florida is willing to retain the max to move bob. He also has a NMC, so getting him to go to Seattle or Arizona could be pretty difficult. It will take a sweetener to take bob even with full retention. If the leafs or any other team wanted to give 5x4 to an older goalie who could be good but could just as easily be really bad they would just resign Campbell or get Kuemper, and not bail florida out by giving them the cap to resign Giroux. Its really not at all ridiculous

EDIT: Bob's 10m is already a sunk cost, even with full retention, FLA can and should be thinking about it as 5m saved, not 5m in retention

My main issue in this deal is losing duclair

The retention is fine but why do a deal where you lose a 30 goal scorer on a great deal

If they can convince bob to go anywhere that's rebuilding (sharks and ducks could even be options)

Them giving up futures is much better for them

I think Bob would only want to be traded to a contender, so that limits Florida's options.

And the whole point of this exercise is to show that Florida is not going to win any trade if they decide to trade him. They will have to give up something, like a 1st round pick or a top 9 forward.

Panthers have literally 0 futures is the big problem. They have to give up something good, and Denisenko and Noel aren't really enough, so a good roster player would have to go back as well. Whether thats Duclair, Bennet, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Lundell, Weegar, Forsling obviously depends a lot on how much retention and what the market for bob actually is/where he would waive to, but those are the only assets FLA has.

Kyper's report says nothing about the Panthers using Duclair to dump Bob, just that they'd retain the max. That's the part I'm pushing back the most on - why is a team that is that hard up against the cap just *giving* away a 30 goal scorer on an extremely team-friendly deal?

If Florida does move Duclair, it won’t be in the division. Also, Florida would rather take a later pick with less retained on Bob.

Kyper's report says nothing about the Panthers using Duclair to dump Bob, just that they'd retain the max. That's the part I'm pushing back the most on - why is a team that is that hard up against the cap just *giving* away a 30 goal scorer on an extremely team-friendly deal?

Well, you might want to rephrase the majority of your strike one, because you were pretty focused on the retention when it's out there they would retain that much on him.

If Florida does move Duclair, it won’t be in the division. Also, Florida would rather take a later pick with less retained on Bob.

If they want to move Bob then teams will insist on getting back a quality forward like Duclair. It won't be Florida's desired choice, obviously, but Bob even at 5 million is not an attractive goalie. And very few teams would be willing to take that gamble. The Leafs are one of them because they are desperate for a starting goalie.

If this does hold, then I could see Florida move Bennett over Duclair.
