LTIR doesn't actually provide cap space. This was purely Montreal trying to get out of a long term deal that prevents them from gaining cap space and Vegas dumping Dadonov. If anything I think this may hurt Vegas

It doesn’t hurt Vegas at all. They went from 200k in space to 5.2 million in space because they dumped Dadonov.
Weber’s deal is under 10% of the cap so they are covered with the 110% off season cushion

It hurts them long term and going into trade deadlines. As a Tampa fan I would happily trade Seabrook to Arizona this summer if possible because not being able to accrue cap space for 2 more years really sucks

Vegas was likely to spend close to the ceiling as possible just to have 21-22 guys on the roster. Assuming they would spend within 500k of the ceiling. At max they could afford someone who has an annual cap hit of 2.5 million. Sure that could be a 10 million dollar player with double max retention but Vegas doesn’t have those level of assets.

This year is not the point, it's more about 3 and 4 years from now

Apparently Sports writer agrees with me. They bought themselves 12Million in Cap relief and made the salary cap a joke...again.....TB is to blame but LV is just making it ridiculous. See evidence below:

"The Montreal Canadiens and Golden Knights combined for a fascinating trade on Thursday. The short version is that Evgenii Dadonov goes to the Canadiens in the trade, while Shea Weber‘s contract (LTIR-bound) buys the Golden Knights serious salary cap relief."

"It’s easiest to see the logic of the Dadonov – Weber trade from the Golden Knights’ side.

Most pressingly, the Golden Knights get out of that $5M Dadonov salary cap hit.

They conceivably heighten their salary cap relief with Shea Weber’s contract. The 36-year-old’s cap hit is about $7.857M per year through 2025-26.

Put that cap hit on LTIR, and it’s almost $8M in space. So, really, this trade is kind of sort of a near-$13M salary cap swing for the Golden Knights.

Weber’s actual cost is also lower than his cap hit.

In 2022-23, he’s owed a $3M signing bonus (likely already paid) plus $1M in base salary. Over the following three seasons (2023-24 to 2025-26), Weber’s owed a $1M signing bonus plus $1M in base salary. It’s also possible that factors such as insurance might soften that already-manageable cost."

What? Just because some idiot writer doesn't understand how LTIR works doesn't make them correct

I would just about bet everything I own, Weber is a Coyote by year 2.
