Description
Inspired by Avs fan @Richard88 posting the Colorado side of this trade, I wanted to see how it might shake out for the Islanders.

Both teams are trading from a position of strength - the Islanders have 4 guys locked in at C but an enormous hole at LD2, and the Avs have Toews(ugh)/Girard/Byram as their LD depth chart but are most likely losing Nazem Kadri this summer(can't see Sakic going long on term with a 31 year old C) and need a solid 2C behind MacKinnon. So Nelson goes to play 2C in Denver, and Sam Girard comes over to fill the hold at LD2 next to Noah Dobson for the next few years. Sakic throws in negotiating rights with Andre Burakovsky as a little treat to get the deal over the hill. Burakovsky signs 6x$6M and as a result, Josh Bailey's contract needs to move and off he goes to Seattle for mid-round picks(the Kraken have said they want to add veterans this offseason - here you go!)

LINES
I think Lee-Barzal-Burakovsky would be a ton of fun. Bura is a solid two way player who can finish, Lee is the king of the garbage goal, and Barzal having two dependable guys on his wings will let him really let his creativity shine.

2nd line was actually the toughest to figure out. Beau-JGP-Wahlstrom seems interesting to me as a mix of a creative playmaker in Beau, a responsible defender in JGP, and a heavy shot from Ollie. I think this line needs the most work.

Parise and Palmieri had chemistry last season so I think they can play together again. I thought about putting Raty here as 3C (hence his taxi squad placement) but I can also see Lou being a little hesitant to throw the kid right in the fire. I could see them signing a UFA to a 1 year deal for this spot - I like Chris Tierney as a potential bounceback candidate that can probably be signed for max $2M. Flip him out at the deadline if Raty tears it up and you want him to take that spot over.

4th line should be Bellows/Martin-Cizikas-Clutterbuck/Czarnik. Cycle these dudes in and out constantly. They're not the B4LIH anymore but I think they can be effective if you are smart about how you deploy them, and if you keep them fresh. Bellows & Czarnik can give them nights off and come in when the opponent requires more skill than sandpaper. I hope Lambert treats them less as a monolith next year.

D pairs are what you'd expect. Pelech+Pulock should be kept together until they give you a reason not to. Girard & Dobson gets the majority of O-zone starts. Shelter Salo with Mayfield and bring him along the way you brought Dobson and pray that you get, like, 60% of development.

I like this team, honestly. I think the upgrade at LD2 is worth the downgrade at 2C - you're asking a couple guys to step up/show positive regression with the middle 6, sure, but you're correcting some bad flaws from last year's team.

If Raty's ready to come in and play 3C next season? This team will be much better than running it back with Nelson/Bailey and throwing a Mike Reilly, or whatever else you get for a 3rd rounder, in at LD2. I

i think they should look at getting rid of varly's contract and somehow dump palmieri as well, that extra money could get them some better wingers
i dont see them being nearly as good without trotz coaching unless the team is just better everywhere

I was joking tbh lol. Just wouldn’t deal Nelson for Girard. If Raty came into camp looking like Anton Lundell we can revisit this lol.

Palmieri has a full NTC and finished strong. Terrible puck luck in the first half tbh. Trotz did a very bad job with their defense this past year. If Salo and Aho had played all year they might’ve made the playoffs as a wildcard. That’s not me complimenting Salo or Aho btw, it’s just about the fact they aren’t Chara or Greene.

$20M in cap space next summer (I had to check like, three times to make sure I wasn't going crazy) - so we'll go on the high end and give $10M to Barzal, bridge Wahlstrom at $3M, and use the remaining $7M to replace Parise/Mayfield/Varlamov - the only three UFAs leaving next summer.

Normal Fans: Let’s trade for this all star level talent.

Me: Which RFA’s won’t be qualified? And who will be on waivers in training camp?

Very likely that Skarek can take over as backup. Wally bridge may be lower than 3 million and in theory Hutton or a cheap external option could take over as the 3rd pair righty.

Varly is hard to find a move for - it's been rumored that he has every Canadian team + Washington on his 16 team NTC so you're basically wiping out most of the teams that need a goalie with that. And after watching Louis Domingue and Pyotr Kochetkov getting major minutes these playoffs, I don't think it's necessarily a bad idea to have a reliable veteran backup ready to go. If they trade Varly, all they have in the org right now is Jakuk Skarek - and I don't think he's ready for primetime yet.

You aren't wrong, you're banking on some positive regression here. Beauvillier shot 5% worse this year than he had for his entire career coming into the season, so I think you can see him bounce back up near 20 goals. Palmieri was brutal in the first half of the year, too - he put up 1 goal and 7 points in his first 25 games before getting hurt. He was 14-12-26 in 44 GP after coming back from injury - more along the lines of what you expect out of him. If those two guys come back to even just their career averages, it would be a big step up. I also think moving Brock Nelson after he scored 37 goals on 21.6% shooting isn't the worst move to make - I feel like he's going to go back to more of his 25 goal pace if he stays on the Isles next year. That's where the title of this ACGM came from, after all.

i'm glad it's not just me because I honestly felt the same way.

let's break it down so both of us can feel sane again: $1.5M in cap space on this team; add $1M with the cap going up to $83.5M next year($2.5M). Barzal's $7M expires ($9.5M). Varlamov's $5M expires ($14.5M). The Chris Tierney deal I signed here for $2M expires ($16.5M). And then you have Mayfield/Parise/Wahlsrom/Panik's buried penalty all coming off the books for $3.344M ($19.844M). This cap has something like $245K in bonus carryover, and now we've made it to $20M even though I still feel like it's impossible.

It would probably hit 3 million at that point. But rn it’s not guarantee that he gets a Jake DeBrusk level bridge deal.

Just rumors - getting any sort of concrete news out of a Lou Lamoriello organization is like getting water out of a stone, so this could just be conjecture from beat reporters. I would absolutely swing a deal centered around Varly for Vanecek if it was on the table - I think Varlamov would be a good mentor for Ilya Samsonov the way he's been for Sorokin.

i kinda want the caps to go get price to have him coach sammy. varly would be nice too since we would have a reliable goalie, but i think sammy can make the jump next year. he was good vs the panthers

I don't think Colorado moves Girard. He is still only 24 and a very good player. They'll likely lose Toews after his contract and will need Girard and his reasonable AAV to keep their window open.

Additionally, Nelson will be 31 next year, is coming off an unsustainable year, and doesn't have the underlying metrics the Avs FO typically looks to. The trade makes some sense on the surface, but a deeper look makes me think it won't happen.

One thought I had to this though - wouldn't moving Girard's $5M make it much easier to keep Toews around? Byram goes RFA after next season, so you'll be able to lock in his number at whatever bridge or long-term deal you get him at. Plus Erik Johnson's deal falls off after next season; while you need to replace him, obviously, you're either going to be spending all of his $6M on a major upgrade(good problem) or you'll be bringing in a younger, more affordable guy. I think Toews signs for $8M max (Makar did them a favor by taking $9M and making an unofficial cap for the rest of the D corps) and with Girard's deal off the books you shouldn't have a terrible time signing him.

Poorly stated on my part. Didn't mean to imply he had bad metrics, but that it doesn't fit Colorado's typical MO. Their acquisitions are always guys that they view as underperforming based on such metrics (Burakovsky, Toews, Nichushkin, Lehkonen, Kadri). It's not typical they chase a guy who doesn't fit that criteria.
