It would have to be something big.

A young (age 20-24), controllable, "heavy skill" top-line forward.

Not sure if there is anything that fits from Habs.

I laughed, not at you, but when a team has a top line 20-24 skilled forward they tend not to part with them. Jersey has some young players that are really good so I thought they might be interested in a 25 to 29 year old player. Similar to Ottawa, they have good young players they need a little older to help grow the group.

If the Devils are trading the #2 pick to Montreal, and Suzuki/Caufield/Romanov are not part of the return, here is the ask :

2023 unprotected 1st round pick
Kaiden Guhle
Justin Barron
Christian Dvorak

Ouch that hurt. Dvo and 1st no problem. Guhle and Barron is the ouch factor, both are future top 4s. I see jerseys team a little ahead of Montreal, which is why a 25 to 29 year old might fit. I would also add next years 1st.

Holes are Top-6 winger, RHD and goaltending.

Struble and Farrell aren't anything honestly. Devils already have too many LHD with more on the way and Farrell is yet another undersized left-handed forward who easily gets beat out by several of the guys in Utica, never mind on the Devils.

Edmundson is fine, but he'd be on the 3rd pairing clogging up the LHD pool I've already mentioned. I'd much rather see Bahl/Smith/Okhotyuk/Mukhamadullin/Vukojevic (see what I mean by too many LHD?) fighting for that position.

Also in the context of the late firsts that Montreal has, I would assume Fitz wouldn't be drafting with them. No reason to trade down in the draft for a player that's likely a depth piece 2-3 years away at best when what the Devils are really lacking is high-end pieces. I assume any picks coming back would be flipped for a guy like Fiala, which makes the trade even messier (and even less likely).

The only aspect I disagree with is you saying jersey has holes at RD. They have Severson and Hamilton, 2 really good dmen and definitely top 4 types.

You don't get #2OA with just a 2023 1st, even without protection. There's a much larger chance that the Devils wind up with a lower pick next year than getting one of the top 2 picks, so you gotta do more there. Sorry.

As a Habs fan I agree with you. More needs to be added from Montreal.

I mean more prospect-wise, IE they would have some interest in Barron.

Ok, since you seem to be the most reasonable person to reply and at least provided some insight into what the Devils needs are, how about this for value\need

Barron + Allen + Ylonen + 2022 1st (Calgary) fills all needs and the Devils get back a 1st.

This is getting close. My only ouch moment is Barron. Jersey has Severson & Hamilton both legit top 4 dmen. And Barron is not a 3rd pairing guy. I would drop Barron and add a winger.

I'm just laying out the info. That package wouldn't be close for me to give up #2. Allen and Ylonen are not useful. Allen is fine, but not nearly adequate to fix the Devils goaltending, Ylonen would likely never play an NHL game in NJ and NJ would have to add quite a bit to get Fiala with Calgary's first being the base.

I'd rather trade #2 straight up for Fiala and I wouldn't do that either.

Fair but Ylonen is better than most give him credit. He’s very reliable defensively. I’ve watched every Laval Rocket game the last two years and Ylonen is very smart. Super fast too

Yeah I get that and that is why I thought they would be looking for a LD but I was told a RD so if we add Barron and selected Nemec we aren't out a RD in the long run lol.

Just simplify… and do Caufield and Calgary 1st.
