Description
I really like him but let’s assume Canes move on from TDA. What teams are looking for blue line offense? Let’s say neither side agree, and the Canes trade his rights prior to ARB.

Marchment Nino replacement. Giroux takes a Pavelski style deal and moves up the coast to Raleigh.

OMG - trigger alert!!! KK on the 4th line???

You could combine the AAVs for the depth defense into a vet defenseman if you want.

I traded way DeAngelo because it was the scenario I was running. Someone want to tell me what’s wrong with Petry @ $4x3?

Don't see why Montreal would bother with that kind of retention on Petry for that kind of return. Those Giroux and (especially) Marchment contracts are light in both term and AAV.

Petry at 4 million is okay but a team retaining for 3 seasons is going to want a ton in return. I wouldnt give up a ton for Petry.

Seattle has too many defenders and now is trading for 3 defenders. Dont see it happening, needless to say Francis being one of the last GMs to TDA.

Where to start...

Petry doesn't have the skating ability to be an effective defenseman anymore. You're better off just using Gardiner in that role for te final year of his deal.

That Seattle trade... I like the idea of Dunn, but TDA is straight up more valuable. 1 mil QO, RFA and 50 points in 60 games... he's one of the better offensive defensemen in the league

I like the Giroux idea

Marchement is likely a little light on money for that term.

Petry has an extension that begins this season, it's 6.25x3. he's old and declining already and three years at such a high cap hit is a big gamble

Saying Petry can't skate is a great indication that you don't watch Habs games. Petry skates just fine and was in fact he was effective once we had a real coach and system in place. Petry finished the year on his normal 40+ point pace and also finished with some of the best defensive stats on the team.

That is why I have the Habs taking 2.25/year retained. Petry $4m AAV x 3 is the only way the Canes would do this. That should have been clear in the post.

I’m a canes fan and I have Caniac2000 on the block list. I see his comments since you quoted them.

Petry can skate. And at $4m AAV he’s very much be of interest for the Canes. The top 4 shown here would be quite formable defensively, and paring Petry and Slavin might actually allow Slavin to shine a bit more offensively.

Suzuki and 2nd + a dart throw on Bokk…plus 12M off the books over 3 seasons should be pretty enticing for a rebuilding team.

I don’t understand why Francis would have an issue with TDA, more than anyone else. Did I miss something? Did TDA kick his dog or something?

Is it? I'm not sure I agree. Montreal still needs to replace Petry, and that will eat up most, all or more of that cap space, probably for a worse D-man. A late 2nd, an injury-prone R. Suzuki and a throw-in like Bokk doesn't really make sense when Montreal has to eat 2.25 mil for 3 years. Petry at 4 mil is worth more than that.

To me, it sounds like you may have not come to the realization that the Habs are going to be rebuilding for those three years. $4m AAV each season for 3 years could be quite valuable to an organization. That is basically three seasons of recouping assets by being a salary cap broker for cap strapped teams. You could
Potential triple your assets recouped in this trade with just the cap space alone.

Trust me, I know Montreal's rebuilding. But management has explicitly said they want to bring in a veteran D if they trade Petry so that they don't throw guys like Guhle, Barron, etc. to the wolves. That's going to eat a lot of cap for Montreal.

As it is, Montreal will start to clear cap organically the next couple of seasons as veteran contracts start to expire. It would be nice to clear more cap, but they're just not going to get much benefit if they eat that much cap on Petry. So they'd have to REALLY like Suzuki and/or Bokk for the trade the make sense to them. And I don't know that that would be the case.
