Toronto would probably need to pay to dump Mrázek's contract. I agree Gibson would be great in Toronto. People seem to forget that the Ducks have been rebuilding and that probably hurt his numbers.

You honestly think Gibson and Mrazek are the same caliber of goaltender? One is elite who has been playing behind a crappy team and the other gets injured when you sneeze on him. They are not the same.

stolarz played 20 games, also two fairly different situations, gibsons clearly frustrated with the team, players become disinterested playing for **** teams

He might have a bounce back, except Mrazek was never considered to be a solid starter let alone an elite goaltender. He just did well in a tandem in a strong defensive system.

Gibson would probably benefit greatly from a change of scenery but he will also be under immense pressure in Toronto, they will probably need to add to their defense for him to post elite numbers consistently but I'm sure he will at least get to league average numbers

I'm sure he still would love to play in Anaheim if they were moving towards making a push. Knowing that you will be playing meaningless because the team is rebuilding surely does take it's toll on elite goalies. I wonder if he gets out before he gets pushed out like Lundqvist (if only he left when they gave him the option the first time when he was still a starting goalie)

Gibson might bounce back but that seems like a lot to give up for that chance.if he doesn’t bounce back, you’re stuck with his caphit for 4 more seasons as it’s unlikely any other team would take a flier on him after being subpar for a fourth season on a second team.

What makes you think strome won’t be qualified? It’s only 3.6 million and he had a nice bounce back season.

Hawks want more than that to take Mrazek's contract and the rumor that Strome isn't getting qualified isn't true, it would make no sense at all.

Except for the years where he was a solid starter right? .... Mrazek isn't good but that's my point. Goalies are voodoo. Promising goalies lose their game.

League average numbers sure makes this gamble even less rewarding.

Last two seasons, with Goals Saved Above Expected numbers from MoneyPuck:

    Stolarz - 36 GP, .919 SV%, -0.5 GSAE
    Gibson - 91 GP, .904 SV%, -21.7 GSAE

Numbers against playoff teams over the last two seasons:

    Stolarz - 15 GP, .911 SV%
    Gibson - 52 GP, .905 SV%

Even accounting for the situations, Stolarz outplayed Gibson. You can't blame Gibson's numbers on the defense in front of him (which, considering it had Lindholm, Fowler, and Manson in its top 4 for the majority of the last three years, is really not as bad as people make it out to be when defending Gibson).

As for the "Gibson's just disinterested" narrative, Ducks fans usually support that by saying he's started out ok the last three years and then fallen off later in the season, which they ascribe to falling off as the team drops out of playoff contention. My question would be, how do you know he's not just getting fatigued because he can't handle the load as a full-time starter anymore? Any team acquiring him for a playoff run is making a huge gamble that lack of interest is causing the decline and not just fatigue in a guy who played a ton of minutes at a young age.

It's definitely a gamble since you never know with goalies, so I'm almost certain that the Leafs would need to make a significant addition to the right side of their defense to at least reduce some of that risk, they would probably need some cap retention too on the Gibson contract. If they are taking that entire contract, they better be getting him on a discount in terms of trade value. His contract is too long for the Ducks to want to retain something like 1m and the Leafs would probably need at least 1.4m retained to have the cap to add a significant piece on the D, and they would also need to move out Muzzin, Mrazek and Kerfoot as well to fill out the rest of the roster.

Seems to me like too many things would have to be perfect. So eiher they take a full gamble on Gibson or they look for a break out candidate/emerging goalie + a vet like Fleury, Hotlby, and Matt Murray (if he gets bought out or perhaps at 50% retention id they can trade Mrazek for him and the other guy is getting 2m or less).

Leafs don't need to add anything on defence and won't. I'm nearly certain they won't chase Gibson either.

Great information, thanks! How did you separate the numbers for "vs playoff teams"? Did you just do it manually?

Unless one of the LDs play their weaker side and thrive in it, they kind of need to move Muzzin or Sandin. Supposedly, Sandin and his agent were worried about what his playing opportunity would be like.

The Leafs always wantes that RHD in their top 4, so unless they bring back Lyubushkin or go out and get a similar (I've seen articles that suggested Phillipe Myers would be a good buyout candidate that they can potentially sign, he was loaned to the Marlies at some point- that would make him a 7th D probably).

They also could use someone in their top 6, but ofc the biggest question they need to solve is the goaltending situation first.

I'm sure they will look at everything and consider moving anyone they can other than MM, AM, and MR and adress some of the secondary needs after goaltending is solved
