Description
Re-doing this from a few days ago due to the feedback I got.

Coyotes Challenge

TL;DR - Using the Coyotes internal cap to make trades and build for the future

Couple of rules I'm self-imposing:

- Cannot spend more than $50 million actual dollars. Last year Arizona spent close to $60 million, but with lost revenue due to the smaller college arena, they'll be looking to cut costs even more.

- I have to provide the current actual salary (CAS) information in each trade that is done under Additional Details. This is done in order to keep track of the actual dollars and keep within the self-imposed limit to ensure I'm not going over.

- Cannot trade for non-LTIR players with M-NTC as pretty much all players will have Arizona on their lists. NMC/NTC are also included in the ban, for obvious reasons.

- Can only acquire LTIR players if they're guaranteed and insured for next season. This means no players that are currently listed on IR alone. LTIR players do not count towards the actual salary, due to insurance.

- The goal I have is to acquire as many picks and prospects as I possibly can for the next three drafts, with the goal of icing a contender ready for the launch of the new Tempe stadium in 2025/2026.

- Must trade Chychrun, due to the rumors of him wanting out of Arizona.

- All RFA/UFA signings must be done at AAV, no gaming system to back-load contracts.

CONDITIONAL 3RD - If Quick wins 20 or more games AND the Coyotes make the playoffs, the 3rd becomes the Coyotes' 2023 2nd Round Pick.

Really, this trade is two parts: Bjornfot, Turcotte, and the 1st for Chychrun and Quick for the Cond. 3rd and Ritchie.

Tying up 10.8m in goaltenders isn't typically the best idea, and the Kings' can take advantage of Quick's swan song season to utilize a better return to further their team. Ritchie had 23 points in 57 games split between the Leafs and Yotes and can help the Kings' middle-six with his size.

The rumors that won't go away is that Armstrong is asking for a 1st + young roster player + prospect from whichever team acquires Chychrun. Bjornfot becomes a bit redundant behind Chychrun and Doughty (signed until 2025 and 2027, respectively) and makes the most sense to send back the other way in a possible Chychrun trade.

Turcotte is a great piece, and with the Kings' nixing any Clarke or Byfield moves, he's the next best prospect trade chip they have. He's likely to try for more than a cup of coffee next season, and alongside Hayton and McBain could give the Coyotes formidable center depth as soon as next season.

  1. Tatar, Tomas
Détails additionnels:
Traded after the signing bonus is given, Tatar joins the Coyotes with the full cap hit and no salary retained, hence a 2023 late pick being moved back the other way.

New Jersey clears the 4.5m cap hit of a somewhat problematic player for a slight profit. Not much more to say than that.

Tatar gives the Coyotes a decent Top-6 presence and a scoring threat. Arizona isn't too worried about how much of a playoff performer Tatar is or isn't, as it's unlikely they make the dance at the end of the season anyway. Depending on how well Tatar performs, the Coyotes would look to move Tatar again in order to recoup the late pick closer to the trade deadline.

I really enjoyed reading your first version and this one. It's well thought of and interesting. Well done!

My feedback would be that I liked the first one better, especially the Chychrun trade. I think we would ask for Vilardi instead of Turcotte because of the injuries. I also don't think LA want to trade Bjornfot as he is a LHD, so they offer one of their RDs. Most likely Durzi, and Coyotes counter with Faber (if he wants to sign). Kings fans don't want to part with him, but we'll see what happens. Apparently the new asking price is 4 pieces as well, so the value is a bit short. Otherwise great work.

Tatar is (somewhat) problematic? Meaning he's not as productive as hoped at that salary or was there something else?

I like this idea. I could also see them trying to retain some salary on a few deadline deals to help out some capped out teams. I'd love to see them retain 50% on somebody like Varlamov (which is only 2 million in real salary) to help him move to a contender. I could see them having interest in somebody like Alex Kerfoot as well, who after he gets his signing bonus has a 750k salary on a 3.5 cap hit.

As a Devils fan, I think the more likely trade target for Arizona is Johnsson. He can play up and down the lineup, and he's attractive to ownership in that he's owed pennies this coming year. I can see a trade like Johnsson and Kuokkanen for a 3rd being a win for both sides.

You've got it right. Tatar was paid to score goals and didn't manage that last season (30 pts in 76 games, 0.39 p/pg). Adding in his complete lack of productivity in the post-season (40 career games, 12 points), Tatar isn't a sought-after player by any club looking for a playoff push.

Once we're into next season and seeing who the contenders and pretenders are I'll look at doing one of those.

I can't see Kerfoot being moved to Arizona, as he has a m-NTC and Arizona is one of the teams on most player's list. Arizona isn't going to be trading out futures and no roster player aged 25+ is worth what it would cost to bring Kerfoot in.
