Bring In Grit Goals And Goalies

Description
Aside from Kampf and Kerfoot, the Leafs depth failed to show up in the playoffs. And I would trade Kerfoot because he brings zero grit to the line up.

Look at Tampa, the Rangers, Edmonton, and Colorado. They all have a great mix of goals and grit throughout the line up. Guys like Kane, Hyman, Kadri, Nick Paul, Corey Perry, and Andrew Copp make a big difference in the playoffs.

The Leafs don't need to add a lot of more goals since they have the best goal scorer in the league and generally a top five offense, but they desperately need grit in the top 9.

I would rather keep Yeezy and 2OA if that’s the package. It would be a better decision financially in the long term

In a couple years that would be a scary line. I think Juraj is going to need some time in the AHL figuring out NA ice though

The Toronto Maple Leafs will not be getting the second overall pick nor will they be getting Yegor Sharangovich. In addition, the New Jersey Devils do NOT want William Nylander. If any Leafs fans do not understand these facts, please take a hike and never come back to this website

Picks and prospects can be added. But that's the core of the deal. And I only made this trade because the 2nd overall pick is being floated by the Devils. Nylander and Sandin are still young and they make the Devils better instantly.

We signed Dougie last year, and we're open to trading the 2nd pick. What makes you think we want more picks and prospects as if we're still rebuilding? Nylander is not the type of player we'd target.

We easily can get Fiala for cheaper (who out-produced Nylander) and just draft Nemec.

That would be the better move. But the rumor is that the Devils want to trade the pick. And Nylander is a first line talent on a good deal.

I liked your first reply but now look who's being unreasonable. You will not get Fiala cheaper in either assets or cap.

Gibson for this year's first and three if's, including two who are underdogs to see the NHL, isn't happening.

I don't think are you are understanding how much's a players value decreases (no matter how skilled) if the team needs to move him. Minnesota is about to accrue nearly $13mil in dead cap, and Guerin has made it quite clear Dumba isn't going anywhere. Fiala isn't going for pennies, but he's not going for the 2nd overall. So why would NJ spend more expensive assets on a player like Nylander (who isn't worth that) when we can get someone better for cheaper? Also I might add, we don't need Sandin as LHD is one of our deepest positions (Graves, Siegenthaler, Smith, Bahl, Mukhamadullin, Hughes, Okhotiuk, etc), nor do we have any interest in trading away Sharangovich.

The consensus throughout all forms of media is that a deal for Fiala would not include the 2nd because he's simply not worth that. The proposed trade will never work.

I've had this argument dozens of times and have never been wrong. A players value isn't gauged by the situation of the team but by the demand for the player.

I'm not saying he is worth the 2oa but really that is subjective. That depends on the position of the team moving it.

2oa for nylander May or may not be a fair deal. But fir the leafs it makes little sense. It would seem the same would be true of devils position.

If engvall and kase didn't show up in the playoffs and have no grit, why would the caps move someone who does do both of those things for them? Hathaway fits their system perfectly, is on a good contract, is a great guy in the locker room, and is coming off a career year. He will not be moved in a lateral swap, and it would take an unreasonable overpay or a package for a much much better player than pierre engvall to consider moving him

In most cases, yes this is true.

But there also haven't been really any teams in the same situation as Minnesota is heading into. 99% of teams wouldn't openly buy out such large contracts like Parise and Suter because of the dead cap implications. Most of the time, teams would just let the contract run to its end or the player gets injured and the contract gets thrown onto LTIR (Seabrook, Hossa, Savard, Clarkson, Horton, Weber etc).

There are a lot of if's, and's, or but's in this case, but here are the "facts" that I think we can both agree on.... Minnesota cannot afford to re-sign Fiala, they seemingly do not want to keep him, and they can't just ignore trading him because the NHLPA would eventually file some sort of grievance and force it. While it might not hurt his value a lot, it does.

Also while I agree as well that a teams value of Fiala is subjective, the general consensus around the hockey world isn't some crap that journalists are pulling out of their a**es. They have sources from within NHL front offices and 99% of their reporting aren't op-ed pieces. They are delivering the message of what they are told from those very same sources. So if the word going around is that Fiala isn't worth the 2nd overall pick, then most likely any trade discussions going on (if it's NJ and MIN) aren't including that pick. The NHL has started to steer into an analytic's-heavy environment, and Fiala outshined Nylander in nearly all offensive and defensive statistics (beyond just goals and assists).

    2nd overall pick > Fiala
    Fiala > Nylander
    Nylander =/= 2nd overall pick

Washington already has enough grit in guys like Ovi, Wilson, Oshie. What they need is more scoring and more depth. Engvall and Kase can each put up 15-20 goals.
