I say fair deal, only took a 7th rounder for a salary dallas doesn't need. This also helps out buffalo with the cap floor though, a pure money move trade.

Honestly Im surprised Vegas didnt think of trading for Bishop

Could have worked on a deal like what Tampa bay did with Johnsson trading him to Chicago for Seabrook

A deal involving Dadonov for Bishop could have been done

Would have allowed them to have cap space and would have given Dallas a 20 goal scorer

I guess Dallas was on hit M-NTC

Now as for Buffalo smart move as just spending in free agency is not a clear formula for success. This allows them to reach the floor without any risk involved

This is a great sign for the Sabres, means they don't need to spend 2 much money. and that the ownership is considering playing the young guys next year!

Dallas just traded a 7th for $3.5 Million salary. Win for Dallas. Helps get Buffalo to the salary floor, but all they got was a 7th... no thanks

Dallas wins

This obviously came from the owner, not wanting to pay ltir money. As why would Jim Nill care about placing him on ltir? Kevyn Adam's took advantage of this knowing that, and he got a 7th rounder
Good job

So, the Islanders don't pay anything for getting rid of Boychuk.

But the Stars need to pay a draft pick for getting rid of Bishop.

That means the Stars lost this trade.

You can't accrue cap space during the year if you use LTIR. That would have been the big motivator, especially because most NHL salaries are insured so LTIR players don't cost more than a few dollars to ownership

This trade points to Buffalo either not expecting to hit the floor. Or, Buffalo will only be a bit above the floor. Remember, they need a cushion so that they can make in season trades without falling below the floor.

They could go out and sign a free agent to a 1 year deal at 5 million per, but then they have to pay that free agent 5 million in real dollars. With this deal, Buffalo covers 5 million in cap while only paying 1.4 million in real dollars. I am assuming Bishop is insured.

Dallas saves 1.4 million dollars in real money, which might not be a major concern, but it is something. More importantly, they do not have to worry about LTIR in season. LTIR is not the same as free cap space. If Dallas doesn't expect to exceed the cap by the complete 5 million hit of Bishop, they will be at a competitive disadvantage when they have to place him on LTIR. Not to mention, without LTIR, they can bank cap space.

The 7th round pick is political. It's Buffalo being able to say, we got something to take on this contract. When the reality is, they need the contract just as bad as Dallas needs to dump it. Which is to say, both teams could probably find ways around their problem if they don't make this trade, but making the trade makes both of their off seasons a lot easier.

Fair, win/win, etc.

Every team has a budget, but I doubt this was an ownership thing. It's a strategic GM thing. They want to clear off LTIR so that they don't have to be at a competitive disadvantage. Saving 1.4 million after insurance is a positive for Dallas, but I doubt it was a consideration with the trade.

I would say Dallas took advantage of Buffalo's situation, not the other way around. This is almost like when Tim Thomas was dumped on the Islanders for free. A team who needed to dump a contract, identified a team who needed assistance to reach or have a cushion above the cap floor. Based on the market Arizona set last year, this should have cost Dallas a 2nd or high 3rd round pick to dump. Because they could save Buffalo money and assist Buffalo with the cap floor, it cost a 7th to dump. A 7th is basically nothing. The pick was probably in there for politic reasons, both with the league and the fans. "We didn't trade for a contract to get us to the cap floor without spending real money, we traded to get the asset!"

I say it's fair.

It's also a good reminder for fans of certain team that assets that are not able to play anymore do not have much trade value even if there might be some perceived benefits in adding such contract to the books in order to get closer to cap minimum.

EA Sports Nhl 2023 Sabres win !

As we can remove the Bishop off the injury list and the Sabres team gets a top 10 goalie in the video game.

Yep. One team needed the space and the other needed to reach the floor. It's a win-win

And not to mention this means we can play more young players next year under one of the best development coaches in the league, maybe the best.

Like 14.5m with only Victor Olofsson, UPL and Bryson as major RFAs to resign. So hopefully that remaining money needed to hit the cap floor is spent on a goalie, Ville Husso‽...and a veteran, depth right dman.

Maybe it helps Buffalo but it doesn't hurt their cap at all.
The only reason Dallas might do the trade, is LTIR players can affect when at team can pay bonus payments. That might be the only advantage Dallas gets out of the trade....and even at that for Dallas it isn't significant.

Dallas wins

How much actual $$$$$ do the Sabres actually pay? No way it's 3.5m more like zero
