Description
Toffoli hasn't been that impressive with the Flames, but unlike Lucic and Monahan, he doesn't have a NTC. To a team that has the cap space, could use an slight upgrade in their wingers, he still has value. That's why I propose to trade him to the Sens.

You'd have to pay Detroit to take Monahan and that pymt starts with either a 1st or a 2nd plus solid center prospect.

If not, well, then no chance a deal gets done

You can read in multiple different posts why your valuation is out to lunch there. It’s not going to cost even close to what you’ve said here.

Here on capfriendly?

Funny cause on RedWing boards that's the general consensus. SY abd mgmt have indicated a desire to improve not continue rebuilding.

Monahans career is all but over as an effective NHL player(another hip sx)

Detroit got a 2nd rd pick for a cheaper more effective Marc Staal. Cant see SY saying that was a mistake, should have asked for less

- Age of the player
- Position
- Pedigree of the player
- Type of regression

Marc Stall was just old and beat on a bloated contract, played in a system that fit him better and earned a new deal. Monahan has been hurt, recovering and young enough to bounce back. See, Tarasenko and shoulder issues. Trying to compare Stall to Monahan trade is a completely misguided comparison. Gotta think theres a little bias on Red Wing boards, take a look around here at some of the Wings posts.

You really early think Sean Monahan has a high probability of returning to being a 70-80pt top 6 NHL center given the volume of surgeries he has had before the age of 30?

I honestly believe Marc Staal was and is a more effective NHL player given age, contract, position, etx.

Monahan is a cap dump for Calgary at this point for a # of reasons. Therefore, he must be treated as such. Otherwise, he should be kept by Calgary

As far as Tarasenko.. STL tried to give the man away for free with no takers.. zero. And I'd still take Tarasenko over Monahan 100 times out of 100 and that's not an insult to Sean

I think OTT would have to think about that trade, Likely not making the move unless they can not find a more offensive players to play with, the real question si what is he gonna need liong term to stay

That was never said at all. I think he certainly has a high probability of returning to some semblance of form which if Detroit, or any team with ample cap space, overpays for 1 year and has the first crack at resigning him as a middle six scoring C for less than his cap hit now it's a very simple move for a lot of teams to make.

Dumping cap for one year on a player that has his potential is not worth a 1st or a 2nd coming from Calgary. If the other team is throwing in a pick or a 750K bottom pairing D/4th line F, sure, what you're sating is a little more realistic

Why wouldn't Calgary keep him if he has a high probability of returning to some semblance of form and have the first crack at resigning him as a middle six scoring C for less than his cap hit now?

A center like that must have substantial value, certainly more than a 7th rd pick especially to the franchise that drafted and developed him no?

You clear cap space for centers like that.. not dump them for 7th rd picks.. unless

Here’s some facts on the contract differences between Staal & Monahan for some civil dialogue.

Staal - 5.8M cap hit, 3.2M salary (NYR picked up SB)
Monahan - 6.375M, 6M salary

At the time Detroit needed bodies on defense so effectively take out a min replacement cost on Staal. Could the same be said about Monahan? Larkin, Suter, Veleno/Rasmussen, Stephens ehhh injuries do happen but at the same time it would be better to get a true 2C in FA for equivalent salary and push Suter to 3C.

Because Elias Lindholm, Mikael Backlund, Johnny Gaudreau, Matt Tkachuk, Andrew Mangiapane...

If Lucic were easier to move it's an easy move to keep Monahan and move a Dube, Valimaki etc. If Gaudreau decides to test free agency Monahan is the easiest keep on the planet this off season but, as mentioned once already, a team with ample cap space taking a flyer on a guy for a year to recover and re sign him or let him walk isn't going to fetch them a 1st or 2nd. You're off base here and grasping, we can both just move on if you'd like.

It's not great to say someone is off base when they say no thankyou.

The problem is when fans wish to remove players and salary that they admit is of little use to them but try and spin it as anything but for the other club.

Im sorry but Monahan has negative value. That's not an insult nor should it be seen as such. Taking on Monahan is a cap relief and roster benefit to Calgary that requires compensation. That's how the cap works.

You may not like it and that's fine. Both people walk away, no harm, no foul.

He has 2 years at 4.25 and will be 32 y/o

He would be a stop gap, a decent one if they strike out on better options (totally possible because Dorion + Ottawa market)
