If you have to move sandin (or lilergren) because of cap issues, don't expect much more than what their offer sheet would be. Teams don't like using them and always will negotiate directly rather than go that route, but it is a threat always lingering in the back of their minds. In this case, Sandin would get offered broadly somewhere between 1.5-3 million, or a second or third round pick as compensation. A home run return for either of them would be a first, a good would be two seconds, a fine would be a second and a late round pick. Look at what Burakovsky, Toews got in return. Even more established RFAs at more premium positions like Reinhart only got a first and a prospect.
As others have said, McMichael is penciled in to play 2c next year, is younger, is still on his ELC, and Caps don't have the same cap problems that the Leafs do. They would give you a second and a third, or a lower tier prospect like Protas for Sandin, but not McMichael.
