This is a bit of a gamble. But the Leafs would get an elite winger to play alongside Matthews or Tavares at cost control for the next three years. Rarely do teams trade their second overall pick so it will take a big offer for the Devils to go through with it.

I don't think NJ does that with Nylander only having 2 years of term. They have some big contracts out there and more coming.

Brutal offer for chychrun

That doesn't come close to getting Jakob Chychrun, Teams like LA and the NYR would easily blow away that offer.

The NJD aren't dropping down no 23 spots, Nylander alone doesn't put them over the hump.

Good players cost money. Good teams work around that. If the Devils want to get better next season they won't trade for a prospect. And teams aren't giving up PPG players on league minimum contracts. So if the Devils want to move the 2nd pick they will take a hefty contract back in return.

I'm personally not a big fan of Nylander, especially because he only has 2 years of control.

But either way, it's pretty unlikely that Slafkovsky will be "elite" within the next 3 years. He may not even be NHL-ready next season.

I haven’t seen those Chychrun offers. But I'm sure its not that bigger.

And the NJ trade includes a young defenceman prospect who is projected to be a top 4 guy. Its a pretty substantial offer. If the Devils are serious about getting better then they will accept moving down to 30th in the draft if it means they're getting back a surefire first line young player in the deal. And Nylander fits the bill.

Major overpay for pick 2. The odds of getting an 80 point winger with 2nd overall is not a guarantee. Yes, they’re more long term; but it’s still never a guarantee. The fact we’re adding a 1st and top prospect is insane.

May I also point out Slafkovsky at 2 would be the wrong choice. Cooley/Wright are a lot better and have far higher ceilings

Wright is going first.

And, yea, it is a big gamble. But sometimes teams that are close to the cap have to take these kinds of risks to maneuver and still remain competitive.

It could be a home run trade, or an awful overpay, as you said. Time will tell with these types of deals.

Man that’s the crazy thing you have the leafs moving from 24th to second, Willy is way more valuable, I’d give you 24th and kerfoot for the 2OA

The only way it’s a home run trade is if the player you pick becomes a 100+ point player, and if it’s not Wrig JT then the odds of that are incredibly slim. For it to even break even in value you would need a long term top 5-10 player at their position, and I doubt Cooley becomes that good but maybe

Slofkosky does solve the cap crunch for three years. But if he’s as good as they say he is, we will have another 8 million dollar player on our hands

This draft isn't deep enough to be moving William Nylander for the 2nd overall pick.

I'd wait to next season where basically all the top 10 players are elite franchise players.

Willy could walk in two years. He will demand north of 8 million. And he won't have a higher trade value than this offseason. I think the Leafs should cash in and move him this summer. If it's not for the 2nd pick then a top 2 defenceman would be nice.

That's horrendous
Kerfoot is worth around a 2nd/3rd
That doesn't move you up 22 spots

Sure but it's pretty clear that Jeresy wants to add size and grit to their top 6. Nylander, while being 6 feet is anything but that

If Devils were one Nylander away from contention, maybe. But he is not the type of winger we need. NJD likely decline.

They can trade for Miller, who brings size and grit, but he's five years older than Nylander and only has 1 year left on his contract. Nylander is the more desirable piece for teams. Also, Nylander will get better, while Miller will decline after his career season in Vancouver.

I don't know what other top line talents are out there with grit and size that teams are willing to give up. I think the Devils should keep the pick and select a big winger. But if the pick is in play, trading for Nylander would be better than trading for Miller.

Yeah ill take Miller 9/10 over Nylander. I doubt he gets mich better than he is already and the 1/10 time is purely because of the extra year pf term
