Description
I see making some necessary tweaks to this roster. The main one being on defense, and bringing in an expensive goal scorer, I would like to see Forsberg as that guy. You lose some depth and Tony D to do it, but it will be worth it.

I hate to see Bear and Necas go but they are valuable guys with a lot of upside but probably get priced out from this roster to get that big talent. I believe we have some good young, cheap talent in the minors that could be ready. I placed those guys in the Taxi Squad section. There is 1 spot on the 4th line RW (I can see Poturalski or Noesen taking that spot in camp over Lorentz). And a few D spots, which I can see Keane and Chatfield fitting right in. Keane has a lot of offensive upside and a good shot.

Again this is what I want to see, not what I expect to see. With Waddell and Dudon you cant expect anything, cause they aren't predictable.

Troch is gonna get more $ & term so that's probably a done deal. Honestly you're better off using that money on TDA or a higher end dman.

I haven’t watched any hurricanes hockey but why are you paying Neidereiter $5.5 mil when it means sacrificing Necas and TDA??

In most cases, sacrificing depth for star power doesn't work out.

Miller (50% retained with an extension) for Necas + Morrow + 1st 2023

Miller at 2.625M > Forsberg at 9.5M for this year, and Miller is a better player anyways. The extra ~7M can go towards TDA and the defense in general for a run next year.

That money that Forsberg commands has gutted your defense though. This team is probably worse next year. Its more like

    Miller at 2.625M + TDA + Bear > Necas + Morrow + 1st

Forsberg or another UFA is an option but it probably opens more wounds than it closes. Morrow and the 1st aren't even pieces you're losing from the roster and Necas is being upgraded. In terms of your Cup chances for next year, that Miller trade helps the team way more.

A year of Miller isn't worth what it costs to give him up and if it comes w/ an extension which is likely the only way a deal like that works for the Canes, you can just use the money / cap on a similar guy in FA versus losing the assets on top of the money / cap you'll need for an extension.

What gutted the defense in this scenario is the OP bringing Nino & Troch back. If we're getting a top FA than you certainly don't bring both back and use that money to return TDA and get a 3rd pair guy.

If you sign a big FA, then Miller at 2.625M will still be way more palatable for next year. After next year its the same situation anyway, so you get one extra year of cap freedom to make a run. I'm also assuming an extension is worked out.

So what your saying is that you can patch up the defense at the expense of your 2C? Do you see how these holes are created and can't be fixed? With Miller you'd simultaneously fill a hole and still have plenty of space to address the defense, rather than choosing one or the other. Again, its a move that gives Carolina the best possible team for a run next year. After that they'll still have Miller, just less cap flexibility (same as if a big UFA is signed).

because us small market southern hockey fans are just wrong, all the time. It also doesnt help the management team doesnt operate like a management team of 10-30 years ago so, its hard to understand how we do business.

No, what I’m saying is if they sign a top FA to play in top 6 they can either bring Troch back and let Nino walk or vice versa and let KK play 2C.

I understand the cap situation in both scenarios. What you’re not taking into account is the value of those assets that can be used elsewhere, say improving the blue line potentially for a player like Chychrun. Less guys like him in FA then there are guys like Miller. So use the assets for a trade in that regard and use FA to get a top 6 scorer.

The package of Necas + Morrow + 1st would definitely land you a good defenseman, but not somebody as good as Miller. I think Miller is getting underrated now since he's a logical trade candidate; he's a 100 point scorer who drove the offense for his team while being the only star forward (until Pettersson caught fire at the end). He would be the Hurricanes' best player in line with Aho since Miller scores more. The only reason he would be available is because if the Canucks organization is looking to go in a different direction.

I understand that you can use those trade pieces elsewhere, but I don't think you could get more value to improve a glaring weakness that the Playoffs exposed. If Carolina is a serious contender then I would want them to ice the best possible team next year and I honestly think that this trade is one of the best ways to do that for them since it directly addresses a weakness. Miller + Trochek + TDA + defenseman + healthy Anderson would make this team unreal.

Makes sense and definitely solid logic when you put it that way. I don't think it's a bad deal or anything like that and probably fair value, but at same time I don't think the Canes would give Miller the type of extension he's likely looking for at his age. Historically they've stayed away from doing that but they're also in a different point of contention within the window so maybe they shift their strategy.

A guy like Fiala might make more sense with the way the Canes like to do business, younger guys on long term deals and vets on shorter deals. Fiala isn't as good as Miller but he's younger and would probably require less assets and $ to lock up.

The Hurricanes definitely haven't made moves like this in the past so I understand the skepticism. It all depends on if management wants to go all in and if the owners will let them spend that kind of money.
