Sabres don't need a 4th line LW. Don't get me wrong, I like Wood but he's redundant when they have Girgensons.

Wild decline easily. You can't just expect us to give our premium asset for your pile of random stuff you don't need.

that caufield trade is way lopsided for Montreal, caufield++ does it for the pick alone, throwing in McLeod and Foote is REALLY generous coming from NJ

Grit just had one of the best Age 20 seasons in the KHL since Kaprizov. He’s a premium asset. And using the Buchnevich trade as a comp, this is more value with Grit, Stillman’s 1st round pedigree, and Zacha’s competent middle 6 trade

Minus the size, Caufield is better than Slaf.

To be honest I did a bit of an overpay imo. Paying a bit more because of the Jack Hughes connection

I wouldn't say Grit is a "premium asset". He is a good prospect and a steal, sure, but premium assets are players like Holtz or Mercer. Same with Stillman. I'd rather have Holtz than those two. Zacha brings basically nothing. You can get middle-six players from the market for cheap (Freddy Gaudreau, for example).

Don't use Buchnevich as a comparable. It was a horrible trade then, it is an even more horrible one now. Plus, when Buch was traded, he had not broken 50 points in his career, Fiala had 85. It is not a good comparable. A trade for Fiala starts with a high 1st or an actually premium prospect.

You are trying to buy a diamond with a bag of groceries.

Buch unfortunately is the better comparable here. The league knew the Rangers couldn’t afford Buch, and they got a horrible return as a result. The Wild also cannot afford Fiala, and even worse for Minnesota Bill Guerin has had a negative impact on Fiala’s value.

If the return is a high first, I would be shocked. Set your expectations lower.

The Buch/Reinhart comps need to die a horrible death. Their contract situations were the same as Fiala's, but Fiala is coming off of 85 points in 82 games. Reinhart was coming off of 40 points in 54 games (shortened season). Buch was coming off of 48 points in 54 games on the same shortened season. Any GM who looks at a those point totals and treats that the same as a player keeping that pace over a full season probably shouldn't be a GM.

"But Minnesota needs to shed cap, they have no leverage!" you say? I present to you exhibit A: McBain, Jack. Multiple teams were interested, so that gave Minnesota leverage to get a fair return. The same concept should apply to Fiala. Ottawa has been interested in Fiala for awhile. NJ has said they want to bring in an impact player and a team like LA that just made the playoffs, has assets Minnesota might be interested in and (most importantly) cap space to afford Fiala makes it entirely possible Minnesota gets a solid return.

Considering Bill Guerin said Fiala only had 3 good months, about the same length of the shortened season, they actually seem like pretty appropriate comparisons here.

I mean I guess thanks for making my point for me?

Fiala over January 28th to April 29th, 54 points in 44 games. Math would seem to indicate those numbers are a better PPG than Buch and Reinhart over that shortened season so again not a comparable.

This was more about protecting Dumba than a shot at Fiala. He’s been on record many times saying he loves Fiala and he’s a great hockey player. The Wild could move Dumba / Zuc and afford Fiala. They do not have to trade him. If people low ball BG, I bet Billy moves someone else and signs Fiala to a 1 year deal. BG still has leverage here, especially with multiple teams interested.

Your point was that the production could not be kept up over the course of a full regular season. Separating the production out like that shows that he was unable to maintain it for the entire season, falling under a point per game outside of the few month window… which falls in line with his production over the couple of previous seasons as well.

It leans towards Buch being an easy comparable for other GMs to fall back on

It was made pretty clear that Fiala was the odd man out. And Bill Guerin really should have chosen his words a little better, because his own words should easily be used against him in negotiations.

Personally, I think trading Dumba should be the move. But Fiala isn’t going to do another 1 year after the season he just had, and the negotiations from last year. He’s going to want a pay day.

Either way the league know a player needs to be moved from Minnesota, and if it’s Fiala then Guerin alsready damaged his trade value. If he can create a bidding war, then he has leverage again, but if not it won’t be a pretty return.

From all reports, there will be quite a few teams interested in him. Expect to have to pair more than Buch or Reinhardt. I’d be shocked if it’s the same or less. Sens really want him and have the ammo to make it happen. I suspect Any team needs to beat the 7OA + if they want Fiala. Dorian is desperate.

Uh.. no it doesn't because Fiala was over a PPG over his hot streak. During the rest of the season his PPG was much closer to Reinhart/Buch.
