Description
Say what you want about Drouin but he is a highly skilled impact player when healthy. The question is, is Drouin and a 2nd enough for 7th OVA. With the potential to also add a 1st in 23 if he can't stay healthy? For me it is intriguing but how do Sens fans feel? It is high risk for the Sens in that Drouin might not play an entire season but that also means high reward for the Sens since they get a 1st as well, if that does happen.
Transactions
MTL
  1. Choix de 1e ronde en 2022 (OTT)
Détails additionnels:
Ottawa is looking for an impactful established player for 7th. This one is kind of out in left field but here we go.
OTT
  1. Drouin, Jonathan
  2. Choix de 2e ronde en 2022 (EDM)
Détails additionnels:
2nd is conditional on Drouin playing a minimum of 50 games. If he does then the deal is done. If not then Montreal sends Florida's 1st to the Sens as well.

I mean you know that's not gonna do it. Start with the Calgary 1st rounder you have then the 2nd rounder and you get their attention and figure out what sweetener you need to add.

I think Ottawa keeps their pick, develops their team more, then trades their 1st rounders when they are competitive. Drouin will be old when Ottawa hits prime.

Why? A healthy Drouin is worth a late 1st early 2nd. Fast, highly skilled top 6 forward capable of 50+ points. Then the addition of a 2nd is a pretty good deal IMO. The cherry here is the addition of the 1st if Drouin does not play 50 games. That alleviates most of the risk for the Sens.

Ottawa wants to do the opposite of trade 1 piece for 3 pieces when Dorion said the 7th is available , he’s talking about Ehlers, Debrincat , Boeser, Fiala, Mangiapane. Really skilled wingers that could help now. We need high end top 6 help with term. We don’t need middle 6 pieces or lower end picks

Rumors are that Dorian wants/needs to make the playoffs, he promised that the rebuild would be over by 21/22 and the Sens would be a playoff team. That's why he traded for Dadonov, now that it didn't go as planned he needs to ensure they make the playoffs or at least are close by the end of the season. His job may hinge on how close he can get them to a playoff spot.

You said it all when you said when healthy. Is he healthy? And there is the little scuffle with Yzerman in TB when he was sent down and posted and refused to play. If he was such a talent why would Habs trade him at all, when they were so bad thos year?

With that pick Sens could do much better, like Broeser, Jesse Puljarvi or maybe even Schifele with something added.

Oh I know but Montreal isn't going to move Caulfield for it so that's all I got. Fiala seems like a real possibility. He really put it all together this season.

1. That's the reason the condition was attached and a 1st is the consolation prize. Remember that 1st is unprotected and the Panthers may end up a bubble team next year just as easily as a playoff team.

2. The Habs would trade him because he is a FA at the end of the season and can not deal with the pressures of playing in Montreal (his life long battle with depression) as a highly skilled French Canadian. The media is among the worst in the league for tearing apart players who are not producing.

Drouin also falls into this category, especially with the 1st attached as a safety net.

if you put it like that then maybe it's not so bad. I just assume that Drouin would have a lackluster year in Ottawa, leave, and then they basically downgraded their pick. I think Drouin needs a super team to get close to his potential

I think Drouin needs a team like Ottawa, fast, young, skilled, smaller market, less toxic media.

Buddy let me tell you, they're gonna want those first rounders. Dorians done a tight ass job at drafting and assembling this team, be a shame to stop building now. This team has so much potential all they need is time, and adding another top 10 pick is unreal. He also just traded Nick Paul, a 27 yr old left winger, which is what Drouin is. If he wanted to make a playoff run next year he would have kept Paul

This isn't 2016 Jonathan Drouin who was healthy and much younger.
This isn't the same as Carey Price who has proven he can still be elite when healthy and even Carey Price doesn't get much unless Habs retain a huge portion of salary (40-50%).

Only way to trade him is to let him play out until 2023 TDL and hope his value will increase just like he did when he was called up in Tampa.

I understand the sentiment, and don't disagree with you on it. However Dorien himself is the one saying that the 1st is available and he wants to make the playoffs. It's not me saying it or anyone who doesn't have inside info it's the Sens GM.

Again that is why the 1st is attached to Drouin. If he doesn't stay healthy then the Sens get the Panthers 1st in 2023 + the Oilers 2022 2nd + however long Drouin plays and however good he plays. Maybe he only plays 30 games and puts up 18 points or something but he could also play a full season and put up 50+ points. That's why it's a small risk for the Sens, either he plays and puts up points for them or they get a 1st from the Habs. Also if he does play and he puts up decent points but the Sens still miss the playoffs they can retain on him and get further assets.

Can't give a 2022 pick conditional to 2023 performances, it would have to be MTL 2023 2nd rounder.

Not sure Ottawa fanbase would be happy with that trade. I think they could have Fiala for their 2022 1st.

This isnt Petry that had one iffy half season. Drouin has been iffy the last few years with injuries and mental health issues. Drouin 'could' become something but the chances arent likely with what we've seen.

Calgary just lost so Montreal will now pick between 25-27th overall in 2022 depending on Carolina and Colorado this round. That pick I'd be more willing to move than Florida's unprotected pick. Absolutely cant deal a 2023 1st rounder with the names available. Florida has a cap crunch and there is no guarantee they make playoffs. Doubtful they finish in the lottery but a top 10 pick is still realistic.

I'd be looking to move someone like Armia plus the Calgary 1st if you can move into the top10. I think Gms still do value Armia's pedigree as a big body with scoring that has performed in the playoffs. Outside 6 or 7 names this draft, it's a dice roll. A lot of teams should be looking to move down!

Ottawa can still sign Nick Paul. Tampa didnt want to trade Joseph but their cap crunch couldnt fit him in and they couldn't tender him as a RFA. They just went all in this season for Paul instead of Joseph in these playoffs. Paul no way signs with Tampa as they are capped out!

Technically the condition is attached to the 1st round pick not the 2nd since the second round pick is theirs regardless of whether Drouin plays 50 games or not. They only receive the 1st IF Drouin does not play 50 games if he does play 50 games then the pick is reverted back to the Habs.
