I think the gripe here is that we're not really sure that there IS a franchise-altering player in this draft. I think Nylander for 2nd overall is pretty even value-wise, but in any case, it's not a deal that interests TOR. They want to win now and this does nothing towards that end. You can say that it creates cap space but Nylander's a big part of why they're so good in the first place.

2oa should only be moved for a elite tender or a package of forward and dman or a couple forwards that could upgrade top 6. 2oa should get you a elc that has potential to crack top 6 so going to need something rather shiny.

a more realistic offer would be willy and a 1st plus. or marner which after the playoffs he just had, there isnt a chance the leafs want to move him. hands down our best player

this is a steal of a trade for the leafs, you can get a number 1 center, a number 1 RD in nemec or jiricek. thats the type of trade they would make. second overall for nylander? id take that all day

Why would Jersey even trade for 7m X 2 years of Nylander.... Jersey would 1000 times better signing a UFA like. Gaudreau for 10m X 7 and not give up anything. Heck the Jersey could get a signed Fiala for probably less than second overall.

High priced players even if they have good value (Nylander was example) don't have good trade value if the Leafs don't expect any cap in return.

if you look at the leafs vs devils. willy dosent fit NJs timeline. neither does the leafs drafting a top prospect if they are in win now mode. nylander for a top pair D makes more sense for the leafs

It doesn't work but if Jirichek or Nemec fall I would look at trading Nylander to get one of those two.

i agree. this draft reminds me of the Quinn hughes/Cale makar where the best players got 3-8, nemec and jiricek are number 1 D men on most teams by the time their ELCs are up

Oh, I disagree. Leafs like so many teams team need cap. Leafs look like they can't sign a good NHL goalie with freeing cap space.
I would trade Nylander for a second Round pick Then there would be room to sign Campbell and 5,25m X 4, Gives the Leafs and additional 1.75, in cap space for two years. But it also gives the Leafs two more year of an NHL goalie starting 24/25. Even if the pick is nothing...the Leafs are better off with the goalie signing. Yep they are worse at RW for two years, but overall better.

Still bad for Jersey. They get the 25th pick overall, 45 pick and 2 years of 7m Nylander for 2nd overall and 70th. Jersey can still spend 7m on a UFA...and there are lots in a cap strapped league, and keep the 2nd overall.
Think the Leafs do well on the trade...,too well, even though LHD isn't an issue with the Leafs. Cap space is

id rather keep the second overall pick, Nemec and jiricek are there, not to mention slofkosky. Nemec and jiricek are both RD who are more than capable of being number 1 D men on nhl teams. something the leafs need mor than a LD no better than riley when the have sandin coming up in the system. where as on the right we have Liljegren and brodie. the leafs can afford to have a rookie D man instead of holl. and by the time Brodie is gone Niemela will be in the nhl aswell. so with that reasoning id rather not do the Arizona trade. that NJ trade is fair in value though

You seem to be forgetting that time value exists and that is why the leafs decline easily. Besides no pick is a sure thing and the odds are that you won't end up with a player better than willy even at 2

if they see one of those RD prospects being nhl ready right now i think they would want to make a trade like this and sign a guy like palat to replace nylander.

also did you see what willy did at the end of game three? leafs won and he show boated by skating around the entire rink when he was announced as first star. im a leafs fan, and i didnt like that one bit. but that has nothing to do with this trade

With a pick as high as 2nd overall, the Devils should definitely take the best player possible and not just draft for positional needs (KK in MTL). It just so happens that the best players at 2 are all centers (Savoie, Cooley, etc.) I could see them like a guy like Jiricek, but I dont think he goes #2 overall. Nemec is really good too but they have an elite puck mover long term with Hamilton. Im really curious to see what they do here
