Interesting take on Pens offseason

Description
Canucks fan here doing a hypothetical offseason where both Malkin and Letang leave due to initial lowball offers. In addition, this includes a scenario where Hextall and coach Sullivan may part ways which is unlikely. Parting ways with Hextall are based on articles that describe new ownership's lack of confidence in Hextall's plan and Sullivan parting ways (while he won 2 cups) is due to 4 straight first round playoff exits

In this case, ownership would ask permission to speak with an assistant gm or someone within the other team. Some candidates that come in mind would be the Blackhawks and how they handled their gm search through whom they interviewed. For example, Tulsky from the Hurricanes is one of them. Out of the four gms I listed, I put Darche as an example of ownership's hypothetical choice.

In terms of the coach's replacement, I feel Tocchet would help them considering he is familiar with the team's players through being an assistant to Sullivan. Without Malkin, I think signing Kessel causes no issues between the team, (specifically with Malkin), brings them depth and he is also familiar with Tocchet.

Signing of Trochek is similar to most threads I've seen since he is a Pittsburgh native and would be Malkin's replacement. The rest are depth signing choices.

If Letang leaves, Marino is no question their best defensemen on the team which leaves him invaluable.

Mainly for the cap dump to resign a cheaper player. The devils need more depth scoring and have the cap space to do it. Most likely have to include a high draft pick

Devils don't need depth scoring, they need high end scoring. So no deal here.

Phil is one of my favorite players of all time and I'd love to have him back in the burgh, but he's not even close to worth $5M at this point in his career. At least not to the Penguins. While I'm sure his scoring would improve with the Pens, it would be poor move. $3M at the most and for no more than two years.

Kessel for 3 years at nearly $6M but not Geno for 3 years at $7M? Come one.
Swap Kessel with Geno and put Trocheck on Geno's wing.

I get that Malkin may have a contract of about 7mil for 3 years. But this thread is if Malkin and Letang leaves: either for more money or if the Caps needed to find a replacement for Backstrom to take on his center role if he retires due to injury. Ultimately, I think Malkin stays and Letang leaves for more money imo.

Dumo isn’t a cap dump. Why are they paying to get rid of him? Contenders would pay for him and since the pens here have over 7 million in cap space, could get more from a contender by retaining. And no way they should bring Kessel back. He did his thing here but that ran its course.
