Why do the Leafs trade a corner stone player for another LD of which we have more than enough of, a mid prospect, and a late first? Doesn't address any of our needs, and we aren't making lateral moves

It's because the rules on here mean the Leafs have to lose every trade by a huge margin or it's unfair.

Not a Leafs fan so im not exactly informed, but I think the Leafs are more in need of RHD so they would probably be more interested in that trade if Marino was involved instead of Pettersson.

It's great if other teams offer him more. Hopefully a Metro contender. That means they will waste cap space on him and not be able to sign someone else.

Guys like Kapanen, Hymen and Connor Brown are what the Leafs desperately need right now ... or rather, needed last week.

While the OTT 2nd is maybe a little much to ask I'd probably still do this because even if he Kapanen takes OTT to arbitration next summer they'd have him for one more year (which is perfect) or OTT moves him at the deadline and gets back a 2nd +. Hell they could move Kap and Brown together (salary retained) for a 1st and solid prospect.

Trading for a guy in hopes of flipping him is such a losing mentality, and the Sens should avoid it. Sens shouldn't be trading for anyone if they don't see that player getting them closer to the cup. To me, Ottawa has plenty of guys who fill that role already. Kappy isn't a difference maker in the top 6, so I'm not interested at all.

I could see him developping well playing alongside Joseph and Stü

He's heading 8th year as an NA pro, he's got well over 300 games in the NHL. we know what he is. He is a 3rd line player with elite straight line speed. He's a worse player overall than Connor Brown, and everyone seems to agree that Connor Brown isn't enough on that 2nd line (really the Stützle line is the 1st line next year imo).

Sens will need one of the guys they have (Formenton, Brown, Joseph) filling out the top six after they make the vaunted top six addition. To me, Connor Brown is very firmly good enough to be that guy, but him needing an extension has me reluctantly in the "trade Brown" camp. The Sens have Jo and Forms in that same tweener zone already, they don't need another one, especially when both of those players can do the exact same stuff that Kapanen does (I'd argue Formenton already does it better).

I love Brown. Just to make our lines more balanced, I just see Brown and Formenton in the bottom 6, and that’s why I think the Sens are looking for a guy like Fiala to fill out that top 6. I don’t want to give up our 7th overall, or any of our elite prospects, so I look for alternatives (Kunin, Kapanen, Comtois, Paul…)

I dunno I think you just gotta go for it. If you trade for an elite player, even if you end up losing the deal, you at least got the elite player. Trying to find middle ground options to address top 6 concerns is how you end up with moves like Signing Evgenii Dadonov or trading a 2nd for Derek Stepan.

If the aim for you is to bet on internal solutions long term, I'd be looking at throwing piles of money at a guy like Perron or Giroux for 2 years. At least all it costs is money.

You’re right! I’d love Giroux, or even better Perron! Everybody knew Stepan was the wrong move and was hoping, fully knowing it wouldn’t work, that Dadonov would turn out.

I never said Kapanen was a top 6 winger and of course I'd rather have Giroux or Perron. But you have to look at all options because we might not land a big fish. And even if we did land Giroux I'd still make this trade because we aren't extending Connor Brown if he's pushing for 4x$5M (or in that range). If we pay him that we for sure run into cap trouble when Sanderson is due. Kapanen is a decent replacement for Brown who will be here in 23-24 even if he goes to arbitration next summer. That extra season gives our prospects another year if they need it, and that difference is worth it IMO.

Do you see Joseph or Formenton cementing themselves as a top six guy next season? Because to me I see that as your 3rd line winger set up going forward. Plus Ridly Greig should be an NHLer by the start of 2023/24 season, so I think they'll be able to replace Connor Brown internally.

I agree that Greig could be ready to step into Brown's role by 23/24, but what the SENS have lacked for years is depth. I mean how many times has Nick Paul ended up in the top 6 for strings of games the last two years? Even Tierney played games on the 2nd line. So while we have the cap space to have a middle 6 guys on our 4th line I think we embrace it. As for Formenton and Joseph, this is a tough call. Looking at the growth of Batherson and Norris from 20/21 to 21/22 (Norris .63 p/gp to .83, Batherson .61 p/gp to .96) it's not crazy to think Forms could experience similar growth in his second full season. And yes, Joseph had a small sample size with the SENS but given the style of game he plays, and his 1.09 p/gp while doing it, it would weird to not give him the opportunity to prove it wasn't a fluke.
MY BIG ISSUE is that deep down I feel giving up what it would cost to get Fiala wouldn't make us a playoff team next season, and would make us a worse team by 23/24 than we could've been had we just been patient for one more season. I'm terrified that pressure from fans will cause Dorion to do something stupid.

Ughhhh. I totally thought Kapanen was RFA at the end of 22-23, but he needs a new deal THIS summer. Disregard everything. Hahaha.
