You're retaining over 9M on Petry, yet you haven't replaced him in the lineup. If you've listened to Hughes, you know he fully intends on signing a veteran stop gap option to replace Petry if he is moved in order to insulate the younger d-men. If you're looking at a veteran, you'd have to assume that the contract would be in the 3M range, meaning you haven't saved any money in the Petry deal. In fact, you've downgraded the position and lost a potentially valuable asset without any remarkable return. Throw in that 2nd and that's now two assets for a limited prospect and an expiring contract. That's just not going to cut it.
Also, I don't know if it was an error, but Sami Niku is not getting 5M for 2 years. He's hasn't even proven yet that he's a regular bottom pairing defenseman.
