Something about a band

Description
It is possible to get/keep the band together, but either Dumo/Petts or Maths has to be gone. Out of the three I like Dumo going, not necessarily to Detroit, but I am sure the Pens could move him if they chose. Zucker would be ideal to move, but likely very difficult, so Kappy will have to not be qualified, or signed and traded for a pick, not necessarily Van, but why not. It's hard to say what Heinen and ERod get, but it would be nice to have them both at slightly less than $4M total. This team wouldn't have a lot of wiggle room with the cap for when injuries happen, but I like the versatility of the players.

You are probably right...but then again that is why I mentioned "not necessarily Detroit" in the description.

So basically your plan is to run it back with an identical team just swap out Dumo for POJ, and Kapanen for DOC?

I think that would be an awful idea. I understand Kapanen was bad but, man, I do not understand the obsession Pens fans have with DOC. The guy put up 5 points in 22 NHL games. He's a fourth liner at best. And as much as I know Kapanen was disappointing because we all expected him to be top 6 material, he's still going to give you more than 5 in 22 (which is only 18pts over an 82 game span). Kap is good for 30 points a year. I'm not claiming he's a great player or anything but he is definitely better than DOC.

As for POJ taking over for Dumo. I mean sure. That could work. But once again. Is that really a good idea? 'm a big believer in POJ and I think it could work, however if your entire offseason plan involves letting your entire team get one year older and then banking on POJ being good, I dont like it.

I think changes have to be made. Not huge ones. But some. A new top 6 winger. A new bottom 6 guy. A new dman. Stuff like that. Im not saying blow it up but you cant just run it back with an identical team and expect it to work, especially when the only two players you're replacing are being replaced with an average AHL 4th liner, and an unproven young dman.

I also understand than cap is a factor here. I think you have to move out some of your contracts in order to gain more flexibility. I'd be cool with losing dumo and letting POJ take his spot but NOT if thats the only move we make. I think you gotta push to move Zucker, Dumo, and unless he's taking a discount gotta let Rust walk. Just the reality of the situation for the pens this offseason.

I agree that it might not be ideal, but unless Hextall is released in the next few days, he doesn't have much options. The current management like Zucker, sure they wish he was cheaper and/or produced more, but he just had brutal injury luck this year. Because of those factors no team is going to touch Zucker, plus the Pens will feel bad and not shop him anyways.

As for this being the same team but older...yeah but no. This wouldn't be Carter playing 2C and sometimes 1C for half a year with ERod playing in the top 6 most of the year. This is with an actually reliable back up goalie/1B. This is keeping Sid happy by keeping Geno (healthy this time, hopefully longer than usual) and Letang around. This isn't replacing Kappy with DOC, it's replacing him with Rakell. This is replacing the corpse of Boyle with currently DOC, but it could be Zahorna or Angello or Puusenen (or however it's spelled) or Bellerive or Legare or several other guys that will get a shot in camp.

Yes I put POJ in there but it could be Friedman. The team plays well with Friedman in, just wish Sully would quit with playing MM with Letang.
