For the #5 overall pick New jersey makes that trade, For the #2 overall pick New Jersey declines.

NJ isn’t giving up that 2nd overall pick, we’d be better off doing business with the Sens, Isles, Ducks, Kings, or Sabres. Soucy trade leaves us with only 1 RHD if Addison doesn’t make the team. Kulikov can go anywhere at this point.

Agree to disagree. I am not overly familiar with where the Devils are from an organizational standpoint, but are they looking to win next season/make playoffs or wait 3 more years for that 2nd overall pick to develop?

We don't need to rush. Our oldest core player is 23. The clock has barely started ticking.

Plus we likely have a significantly better season with only average goaltending

Why? It's not like they grew up together or anything.

Kaprizov would be pissed if they traded his bestie Zuccarello.

I imagine that’s a good deal for nj. Honestly considering how much deeper 2023 is as a draft class I could see the wild going for njd 2023 1st and a 2nds in this deal. So it would be more like fiala and 2022 2nd for 2022 2nd and 2023 unprotected 1st. Nj wouldn’t expect to be getting #2 overall, they get their player and the wild get a bit higher of a 2nd and a 2023 1st.

Devils would not be waiting 3 years for anyone taken #2 overall. Maybe 2 years for Cooley. Maybe a year for Wright if he falls. But Slafkovsky or Nemec are probably in NHL next year. So it’s a bit of a false choice.

Also, as long as Fiala is unsigned, it’s hard to imagine Devils offer much for him.

I am not disagreeing with you but that his quite debatable. Fiala would have an immediate/guaranteed impact within the Devils lineup. He just had a career best 83 point season playing with a good rookie in Boldy and albeit, a 3rd line center in Gaudreau. Be scary to think of the points he could put up with a legit center on his line. His ceiling is still untapped IMO.

We are patient. After the 2012 run, Parise and Kovalchuck left us high and dry and there were a few attempts at speeding up the retools/rebuilds. They often made things worse. It really wasn’t until 2019, after we traded Hall, that we really took the slow, draft and develop, 4-5 year plan.

Attempts to speed things along make me think of Cammalleri, Ryder, Clowe. That makes me nervous.

I’d rather we keep the pick.
