My Realistic Off-Season

Description
-Dubas said they are more or less running it back.

-Friedman speculates both sandin + liljegren ariund 2mil

-Also speculates he will go after a goalie in a similar situation to Campbell a few years ago

-Muzz has a NTC, he isnt going anywhere

-Tavares is near impossible to move

-Highly unlikely they move Willy

-Nick Paul may not be the guy, but centre and goalie depth is where i think they spend. Paul could possibly move to 2C in between Tavares and Nylander, although thats not ideal.

-Clifford, Spezza & Simmonds rotate in.

-Dont be surprised if Dubas pulls another guy from our of nowhere like he did with Kampf

THIS IS NOT WHAT I WOULD DO, BUT A MORE LIKELY SCENARIO.

Have to imagine Seattle is on both players No Trade list.
Also not sure Driedger would be interested in coming with his NTC / or if we would want to risk taking it on.

Omg i didnt even realize Holl had a M-NTC... How did he get that ?!

I think Driedger would be willing. Gets to split games with Campbell and his team will get at least 7 playoff games.

Just about everyone gets one now. If you're re-signing with a team, or taking big money somewhere, some form of NTC is negotiated. If nothing else they tag it onto their last season so they don't get moved at the deadline from contender to a bottom feeder.

Yeah, regardless of what's going the other way, Driedger is a HUGE risk. Seattle bought on a super small sample size of success on a strong defensive team. It's the Carter Hutton scenario-Guy plays great for a relatively short period of time and gets absolutely exposed when he gets a full time gig. It's like Husso-Some team is going to pay him extremely well, with some term on it, based on a career year (best statistical year of his entire pro career, NHL, AHL, etc.) as a 27 year old. That's a massive risk.

Thats what the leafs did with Campbell. Heard Dubas is looking for the same type of situation. 2 Years left aint so bad.

His contract is so unpredictable. He was lights out for 2 months, then terrible for a while, then decent for the last couple weeks + playoffs. Somewhere between 3.5 - 4 is what i would give him personally.

hmm forgot about that. Maybe they do try to move him. Back to LA maybe? Dubas will try to do right by him one way or another.

Campbells price tag was typical of a back up though. It was worth the risk to bring in a guy that cost back up money, who was comfortable in that role-- but could also push Freddy at the time.
Everyone is looking for that situation-- scouts and GMs jobs is literally to identify these types of contracts/deals.

No. He has a full NTC until final year of his deal-2023-- and then it's a M-NTC.

My go-to would be Scott Wedgewood as a FA, or Stolarz if the Ducks would give him up. Maybe both as a solid 2-3 split. Jack plays 45 - 50, those 2 play 15-20 each.

Someone I could also see as a goalie option is Blackwood. Young, has struggled in NJ and if they get a different starter he could def be an option

Good points but I think he’s going to test UFA and get a bigger offer from a team that might be desperate for a starting goalie. Especially with his overall stats from the last 2 years, he’d be dumb not to.

I hope he stays, but this is most likely his last contract so cant blame him for seeing whats out there. I could see someone giving him 5m

I suspect Campbell was battling an injury or issue - which the Leafs management would know about. Campbell is a good goalie in a nearly empty FA year. Not signing him means a trade to a riskier option. Campbell isn't Vasilevskiy but he delivered when it mattered in the playoffs. Leafs problem has been people who don't deliver then. Campbell should get re-upped unless he gets a $6M+ deal elsewhere. Price will dictate if he leaves. Then the Leafs need to consider bigger moves. I would hope by now Dubas has learned that you don't wing it with your #1 goalie. Championship teams and Cup contenders all have reliable elite goaltending - Price, Vasilevskiy, Fleury, Holtby, Bishop - all were Vezina candidates in those years.

Honestly, I let him walk if its over 5m. Tandem goalies are what they need, and their top 5 guys salary doesn't let them spend that kind of money on goalies. It sucks to stay, but since the cap hasn't gone up like expected due to covid, they just dont have the money.

That being said, if they can find more guys like Bunting and Kampf on cheap deals to round out their roster, maybe they can get Campbell to a higher number done. I just dont see it right now

Hey if hes on the block, you 100% go get him (depending on cost). 2.8m is so worth it for him.

Yeah, Campbell had a longer run of success in the AHL and NHL in LA though...less of a gamble, IMO.
