I wouldn't mind having Wagner in Belleville but there's no world in which we give up anything to acquire him, and since we can't claim him off waivers just to send him down... Ottawa declines.

you arent getting a 1st and 2 established good young roster players with a prospect for scheif. bruins also dont want scheif. rather just keep those assets in this scenario.

Agreed

It honestly just makes more sense for Boston to waive him and bury part of his cap hit in the AHL for the year vs paying to move him.

Its only $3M for one year to add a 2nd rounder. Id actually think about taking it. Its like an upgraded Givani Smith with Leadership for the young guys. Could work out overall in Detroit's favor. We will definitley have the space. Worst case he is a healthy scratch every night.

If Boston offers me that trade in Detroit, I would accept. Its a stupid trade by Boston when they can bury him for about the same price. But ill gladly take the 2nd rounder to bury him over here.

Why buy him out vs put him in the AHL?

Buyout Route
'22-'23: $1.9 million hit
'23-'24: $933k hit

AHL Route
'22-'23: $2.6 million hit
'23-'24: no hit

I'll take an additional $700k hit next season so I don't have a $933k hit the following season

you only have 5 forwards signed for 23-24. the 933k hit wont be that bad. you need every cent next year with or without bergy.

700k isn't even enough for a league minimum contract. You also have to figure that Bergeron (if he re-signs) will do a 35+ deal with a lower hit and some easy bonuses that will be count against the cap next year. That $933k next year could cover close to half of that carry over in Bergeron bonuses.

true but you also have a young crop of players coming up that should fill out your bottom 6 in 2 years... mclaughlin, steen, lauko, studnicka, merkulov, beecher those guys should all be relatively cheap. obviously ALL wont hit but you gotta take a chance or move on from them to acquire better players up top.

true projection purposes. swayman gets roughly 5m long term. pasta gets a big raise. idk how much but lets say in the 8-10 range (likely higher in that range which scares me a little) thats 15m of the 25 currently available now trades will obviously change that. reilly is 3m out the door now youre at 28m grz is 3+ if you move him, forbort is 3+ if you move him. doubt bruins resign smith after next year, same with haula and nosek potentially. theres talks of lazar coming back. frederic shouldnt make that much on his next deal. i still project lysell as an nhl player sooner than later. debrusk likely moved idk who they use to fill his role (maybe lysell).

I'll be honest I have little to zero confidence in Boston developing forwards lol. Since 2015 the top 5 forwards they've developed (based on GP)

1. DeBrusk
2. Frederic
3. Studnicka
4. JFK
5. Senyshyn

I really just don't see them buying out Foligno to save $700k this year but spend $933k the following year. If they waive him maybe they get lucky and someone claims him. He'd have a $3.8 million cap hit, but only only $2.8 in actual money. Could they explore a trade post his bonus payout as well? sure. ARZ is going to need help getting to the cap floor. Would they take him for future consideration, retain 50% and flip him to a team not on his NTC for a late round pick? maybe.

1. DeBrusk - fine player
2. Frederic - bad pick everyone knew he shouldnt have gone where he did
3. Studnicka - the only real outlier in terms of "poorly developed" still has time to prove himself in the nhl....
4. JFK - didnt something happen with his family where he went overseas and then just never came back? i dont know the full story there.
5. Senyshyn - reached pick that really shouldnt have been drafted where he was.

16 team no trade and you gotta think its 15 playoff teams and then the next closest. and tbh none of those teams can afford 1.9m nick foligno nevermind 3.8m foligno. someone could claim waivers but i doubt it.

they also traded their 1st rounder 2 times since 2018 and took a dman 1st in 16 and 17. harder to develop the forwards outside of first round... alot less nhl quality players there in terms of both defense and forward. the further down you go.

The Bruins entire core of forwards during the cup run and the 2013 run were not 1st rounders (Krejci, Bergeron, Marchand, Lucic). Tampa has done a pretty good job of trading away first rounders but still able to draft and develop guys. Where the guys I listed were drafted doesn't really matter. JFK before he left was ok at the AHL level, but nothing great. Senyshyn they tried to turn into something he just isn't, which again goes back to them not being able to develop guys. Studnicka has time still, but he's not longer waiver exempt starting next year and he struggled to crack the roster this year. Unless they move on from someone odds are he's starting the year as a 13th forward.

To go 5-6 years and you only have two forwards with 100+ games is just unacceptable and its why we go out and overpay for guys like Nick Foligno.

sure sure ide say thats more luck/better scouting than anything though. cirelli at pick 72 kucherov at 58 palat at 208 killorn at 77 point at 79. and they needed ALL of those guys to hit. if point doesnt hit, or cirelli doesnt hit, or kucherov doesnt hit that team isnt even close to what it is today. theres definitely alot of luck involved in tampas case. you dont just say heres our program youll be a stud if you can handle it. they continually landed diamonds in the rough.

Funny enough in Sweeney's presser today this topic came up and he said (paraphrasing a bit)

Its not about just getting lucky, its about identification and development.
