Description
Devils Trade:

Despite having a strong start to the season, Andreas Johnsson is once again seen as overpaid and is a potential buyout candidate for the team. In the event he isn't bought out, the Leafs should welcome him back at 50% retained if possible. He's continued to have great underlying numbers in Jersey, and Leafs fans know what he can bring from past experience. Miles Wood is a fan favourite of Devils fans but after missing the entire 21/22 season with a hip injury he is now a pending RFA. Wood is exactly what the Leafs need in the bottom 6, a speedy winger with a great shot and a lot of tenacity (think Blake Coleman). In return Alex Kerfoot who should be an upgrade over both for the Devils who can play in all situations and every position. Also, offensive defenseman Joey Duszak who has done excellently in the AHL and is looking for his opportunity to make an impact at the NHL level and a 4th round pick in 2023.

Washington Trade:

Samsonov has had a rough time after being very highly touted while he was in Russia. His counterparts in Sorokin and Shesterkin have become amongst the top goaltenders in the league while Samsonov has struggled to hold down the starting role on the Capitals. I believe Samsonov is worth taking a risk on, and the Leafs may be better letting Jack Campbell walk. Capitals GM Brian MacLellan made it clear his top priority in the offseason is a veteran goaltender, which is where Petr Mrazek comes into play. Mrazek has been a strong goaltender historically but after suffering injuries early hadn't been able to find his groove in Toronto for a while. Once Mrazek was finally getting his game back he got injured again. Mrazek's $3.8m is relatively cheap for a starting goaltender and I believe he is a perfect fit for Washington. Also heading to Washington is pending RFA Pierre Engvall who had an impressive season for the Leafs with incredible underlying numbers. Prospect Pavel Gogolev and a 2023 3rd are also included to sweeten the pot, with a 2022 5th coming back to Toronto.

Vancouver Trade:

Conor Garland has been in trade rumors all season due to Vancouvers cap issues. Garland is an incredible talent who is signed at a steal of a contract for the next four seasons. The Leafs have been involved in talks for Garland dating back to when he was on the Coyotes, and I hope that he's a player they target this offseason. The proposed return for Garland is the Leafs 2022 1st round pick, 2nd round pick 2024, shutdown defender Justin Holl, and prospects Roni Hirvonen and William Villeneuve. Depending on how high Leafs management is on Nick Robertson I'd consider putting him in this deal instead, but I'd prefer to give up future draft picks than almost ready prospects.

Signing Explanations:

Josh Ho-Sang - skilled forward who did well with Marlies and looked great in preseason, deserves a shot
Colin Miller - great underlying numbers historically, is from Ontario, played in the SOO as captain under Dubas and Keefe
Ilya Lyubuskin - looked great with Leafs, constantly improved, would like to see him stay
Mark Giordano - looked good with Leafs, hometown guy who is 40, Spezza type deal if he wants it
Sandin + Liljegren - bridge deals that expire same time as Brodie + Muzzin
Kase + Blackwell - didn't extend them but interest to bring them back remains if the price makes sense

Canucks pass Holl is useless and a cap dump rest are AHL pieces and the late first doesn't get it pushed over the edge it's going to take a top prospect to move Garland or Miller no need to do it other wise

Holl is not a good defensemen. He was brutal in the Tampa Bay series, especially in game 6's OT goal.

Well thought out, but my two cents on your defense alone:

Girodano chose where to go when he had a NTC and as a TDL piece for 20+ games. As a UFA, he won;t take a 750k 1 yr deal.
Lyubushkin is a UFA, is in demand as a RD, and will get more than the 1.6 he makes now, its laughable to think he signs for just 1mil.
See above for Miller, he doesn;t sign for 1mil. (Not to mention, you cant even dress him in the lineup above at 1mil)
without going through each one, I'll move on....

Sandin and Liljegren will not take 2 yr bridge deals, (in your explanation, you say this takes them to Muzzin and Brodie expire, but it also takes them to Nylander and Matthews, and past Bunting and Ho-Sang. And dont forget the last 2 guys who took "bridge" or under market deals, Ajohnsson and Kapanen, and promptly got moved). Its also a moving commodity for the team, theres no way the Leafs dont make other deals in that 2 yr time frame on defense, they'll want some sort of commitment from the team and wouldnt be waivers exempt.

And a team so close to contending like the Leafs, shouldn;t be looking at goal for cost savings. (And dont get me started on the Mrazek suddenly is a reliable number 1 goalkeeper: DET, PHI and TOR found him an unreliable backup). With that team defense, goal tending is the one position that shouldn;t be a risk on a goalie finding his game, not to mention Kalgren didn;t look that great after his first few magical games.

The Devils Trade doesn’t make much sense. They already have forwards similar to Kerfoot, and don’t really.need a 24 y/o winger that hasn’t been able to break an NHL roster. Plus the salary retention, that’s an easy no.

Johnsson is not a buy-out candidate. At worst, they put him on pre-season waivers and he is claimed by cap-agnostic team (salary would only be $750,000).

Wood is a heart and soul guy for this team. Devils need him back.

Plus the fact that Kerfoot and Devils have a bad history
