Both Bertuzzi and Yzerman have publicly stated that it is their intention to sign an extension as soon as it's allowed after the 1st of July this summer.

Teams pay more for UFAs at the deadline, this would be a full season and they would have a full year to negotiate. Him being a UFA wouldn't affect his value very much if at all. Also that's not a return Detroit would be looking for.

And when was the last time a rental costed this much? Erik Karlson? Is Bertuzzi really this good?

The point I was trying to make was one of value, and not whether Bert would walk or not. I wasn’t intentionally trying to suggest he will walk, but I can see how you thought that.

Well just by looking at those years trades. Rakell was pretty close in value, Copp isn't that far off, Lehkonen also not much less, Giroux, Hagel is not a rental but he got more than that. Even Josh Manson was close. Not knocking on Sandin too much cause I think he will be good and is showing it now, but those are just the trades this year that got either close too or more value than that bertuzzi trade.

Rakell wasn't really even close to this value, he was a second and a couple of meh players/prospects.

Copp wasn't terribly far off, depending on how far the rangers go. If they don't beat the Canes, then yes it is (2 2nds and an ok prospect).

Manson wasn't really that close, a second and a pretty good prospect, but probably the closest out of all of them.

Lehkonen and Hagel were not UFA's.

Giroux is a fair point. Giroux got about as much as this package (not quite, but very close). But is Bert really a lot better than Giroux? No, not by much, if at all.

Detroit is probably looking for a young center prospect in return for Bertuzzi. They have 4 or 5 LD prospects that will be making the jump in the next year or two. A realistic trade would probably look like Knies and a 1st but not sure Yzerman accepts that.
