I think I'm swayed a bit by public (MTL fans) opinion. Coots has been healthy, productive and a great two way 2C until this year. But his contract size and length is scary. IMO, Montreal with Suzuki, Couts and Wright down middle would be awesome, with Wright in time taking the 2C position as he develops. To me, its really solid for MTL, but opens up some options for PHI as well

But for PHI, moving Coots affords a short term solution at 1C, (under 6.25mil), while solidfying the center position by having Hayes, Frost, Dvorak, Laughton able to take 2C-4C.

I mean Ill gladly pay Monahan + Dube/Valimaki + a 1st as a base for him. Coots is a fantastic player that was hurt this year. simple as that

You're right on Couts, he is a 65+ pt Selke player with size, although his contract is hefty and long, he is worth it. And the price above is weak.

Well that sounds awesome, I dont think 6.3mil Monahan works for PHI though. IMO, if they are moving Couts, its for some cap space and a solid two way, top 9 player, (Monahan doesn;t offer enough of either, although I think he is a solid top 9 guy.)

If CGY could move Monahan, I think PHI looks hard at some kind of Dube and a 1st deal (LD is not an issue with Provorov, Sanheim, York, Zamula and prospects in PHI, so Valimaki doesn;t help). If Zadorov or Gudbranson were under contract, they'd fit the bill. If it were Monahan with 2mil retained, Dube and a 1st its closer.

Couts NMC kicks in 6 weeks, There's no freaking way Fletcher is dealing him after giving him a lucrative long term contract.

True, but PHI also has JVR and his 1 yr to move.

But if all the moves above worked, and CGY offered Monahan, Dube, Valimaki and a 1st, and PHI or CGY had to give up Valimaki for Monahan half retained, thats close.

Exactly, need to work those phones...

To me, PHI doesn;t have to trade Couts. And Couts, Hayes, Frost, Laughton down the middle in PHI is fine. But the cap/compensation of moving one of Hayes or Couts could make it worthwhile to move the club in a different direction. (Some PHI fans want to buy a Gaudreau or Forsberg, I'm of the opnion I'd rather have less BIG contracts, and spread the talent/youth throughout lineup).

Fed is looking to be a very solid goalie prospect, but currently is unproven, so high risk, high reward

I think coots cost you more… for starters, switching the canes 3rd to the Habs 2nd could help. I know his contract is big, but for 2-way C at his skill level it is a cheap contract and he has earned it and these type of players do tend to last pretty long.

Also not sure id move Sanhiem for Debrusk. Sanhiem looks like he is ready to be the top pair D, would rather move Provorov and get a pick as well

He's 25 and had a solid regular season and an elite run in the KHL playoffs. Apologies for being blunt but that's hardly uncommon- especially on the team he plays for.

But the greater point there is that the other pieces involved hurt the Oilers. First off, Ceci has been a very valuable addition to the Oilers' blueline (1st pairing, shutdown mins w/ Nurse since Woodcroft took over). Secondly, they're cap ****ed next year and would be adding 3.8mil in cap in that trade for a player they have no need for (while opening up a hole at RD).

I am a Habs fan and I say this is bad for Philly. Like your trading Coots cause you need to open a center position (1 center) but you are taking back a 3C, here is the issue, GM's don't view lineups like fans do. For a fan they see moving Coots out and needing to fill the 1C hole with a FA or through the draft or whatever. For a GM they see this as a cap saving move, Coots leaving and Dvorak in means their C lineup is Hayes-Frost-Dvorak-Laughton 1-4 so they no longer gave to have a need for a center and can spend cap somewhere else. That's just the start of the issues though, looking at the actual deal I think Montreal has to add quite a bit (so much that it doesn't make sense for them), like swap the Oil second for the Habs 2nd and swap a 3rd for Barron and swap Dvorak for a winger not named Caufield and add the Panthers 2023 1st (top 10 protected), at the very least.

I really hope most of this doesn't happen, and I don't think a lot will despite the season we've had. In short I like the DeBrusk trade and Burakovsky. But under no circumstances would I entertain a return of Giroux. Flyers needs to move on. As Chuck said, the young guys will get a chance to show what they can do.

A 25 year old long shot and a cap dump for Edmonton's 1RD and nearly $4M in cap space? Are you crazy??

You should know that EVERY team has similar or better goalie prospects. For instance Edmonton has Konovalov who posted .922 in the KHL last year as a 22 year old. You aren't getting more than a 7th for your mediocre 25 year old prospect.

Skinner looks like a solid prospect honestly, Fed isn’t really a long shot. Honestly, I wouldn’t do this move if I was Philly because I think at the end of the season he will have more value than now. Anyway, if you want to under value return talent and over value the pieces that are being proposed in a fictitious trade, that’s fine. Not going to stop you

LOL. You should do a reality check on that. Ceci has been fantastic for Edmonton and you think he's worth a cap dump and a C prospect... lol. Keep your garbage.

I never said it’s a fair deal or that Cody is bad, Cody put up very similar stats to Justin Braun this year for Philly… Very solid and responsible player. Maybe not a true top pair guy but is doing the job well, for now.

You keep undervaluing Fed though, I don’t know if you’ve actually watched him play, or just looked at numbers, but he is a very composed goalie who faced a ton of odd man rushes and his size, speed, and agility are very impressive.

Like I said, I wouldn’t take this trade. I would like to see him have at least 30 games this year with the Flyers terrible D and see if he does better than Hart. Then make a choice later. This is nothing against Cody, fantastic player. Just don’t want to give up a guy who very well could be a starter if he is able to adapt to NA style of play.

I also think if the Flyers move JVR they will be sending picks to a 3rd party team and eat salary…
Something like ARZ takes a 3rd and 5th to eat 3.5, Philly retains an additional 1.75, and all of a sudden JVR is a 25 goal scorer at 1.75 and has very good value. JVR is not a bad player by any means, solid middle 6 player who is still very smart, just 7 mill is way more than he is worth.

So while I don’t want to do the deal, I am just saying I think I can see what OP had in mind

I haven't watched Fed, no reason to. But if you look at his numbers, they trail two of Edmonton's goalies who played in the KHL: Koskinen and Konovalov. Not interested.

That’s fine, I like to do an eye test more than just look at numbers. I remember hearing of a goalie and his impressive numbers before getting drafted. Watched him play and the bare basics you learn as a goalie he seemed to be terrible at. Guy tries to save a wrap around by sticking has pad all the way in the back of the net… granted the shooter didn’t tuck the puck in but 99 times out of 100 at a skilled level that’s a goal.

Fed looks good, but if you don’t want him that’s fine. Lol
