Description
I love the Leafs more than anyone. My first reaction yesterday was to replace Keefe with Trotz, a guy that should get the most out of each player. I’ve realized that it is a 32 team league and it’s really hard to win a Stanley Cup in a competitive league no matter how much talent you have. Florida is going to face Tampa in the next round, both amazing talents and yet one of those of teams is going home. That being said, Toronto isn’t cursed, just ask the St Louis Blues, Boston Red Sox, Chicago Cubs, eventually this team will win, and yes get out of the first round. Losing to the defending champs in game 7 by 1 goal isn’t anything to be ashamed of, and this team established a franchise high in points in a really competitive division and conference. Things to be proud of. I don't think major changes need to be done. Keeping the core together is key, and with great talents on the way like Robertson, Amirov (hoping he recovers from a life-threatening injury), Niemela, Knies, their first rounder this year, their future looks bright. I think Mrazek gets bought out, and I don't know if they hit the franchise high in points again, but if young guys like Liljegren and Sandin continue to progress, and Robertson a solid rookie season its not impossible.

An offer sheet for a 3rd round compensation ($2,055,364) is coming for all your RFA's.

Kerfoot is just a rental now with 1 year left before UFA so adjust that pick to a 3rd rounder since Buffalo picks at the top of the draft.

Mikheyev is way underpaid.

Buying out Mrazek and keeping the core 4 means Bunting is leaving in UFA after the year and Toronto will get nothing for him.

Can't see the Sabres wanting Kerfoot. poor analytics and they're gunna wanna keep spots open in the top 9 for peterka and quinn

50 point centreman who plays the penalty kill with great speed for a early second rounder seems like a good deal to me

i think it makes more sense to trade mrazek away instead of buying him out. the leafs need all the.money they can to ice a competitive roster.

Toronto assets unfortunately leave via free agency (Hyman, JVR) and yet they find replacements. Mrazek's contract is really unmovable, they'll need that money to keep core guys. Mikheyev might get 3, he's had issues with health, and Engvall has had one really good season, i don't know how much more an increase he gets, (2 million maybe)

I'm not a Leafs fan but I think your head is in the right place. As an outsider, I think in order to build a contender, you'll have to get rid of Mrazek (buyout), Nylander (blame Tavares' NMC), Kerfoot, and Holl (too expensive for 3rd pair guy).

In their place, your big priorities are:
-sign your young, promising RFA's while keeping enough future cap space to re-sign your existing youngsters like Bunting.
-pick up a top 4 defenseman who is rock solid defensively (Larsson is probably the best chance, since there's no way Dallas is trading Lindell)
-sign a cheaper top 6 forward like Smith for ~$5M/yr.
-get picks for some of the guys you're trading away since your management has shown it can draft well.
-figure out if Campbell is your guy and pay him this summer if he is, or sign/trade for someone if he is not.

empty point totals dont make up for poor underlying numbers. He's turning 28 and will be a UFA next year. Doesnt make sense for the sabres to give up a top 40 pick for a guy they will either lose in a year or get stuck overpaying to keep him from walking.

that means trading assets, and Mrazek has a no trade list, so that makes it even more difficult for someone to take on his deal. I don't think he'll want to go to a non playoff team anyways making it more difficult. Buyout seems to be the option

I think there may be a taker for him at that price, it just won't be the Sabres. They are not to the point to where paying for rentals to make a run makes sense.

Well said, a team will pay a second rounder for him though, if Dubas can get the 15th overall pick and a prospect for Kapanen he can get a second rounder for Kerfoot (yes I know Kapanen has RFA status)

Also, I don't think any team would be willing to take him without Toronto sending a pick over with him.

Yeah I dont doubt their ability to move him, just doesnt fit what the Sabres are after right now.

i mean, he would like probably more a non playoff than the.minor. i know its trading asset but i feel the leafs need to grasp that their window is now. trading asset makes sense.
