No team at any time would want to retain that much for that long on any player.

Think of it as the Leafs retaining 5.5M on Tavares for 3 seasons. In addition to wasting a huge chunk of the owners money and essentially paying someone to play for another franchise, you need to replace said player, meaning you're not saving any significant amount of money.

I agree, around 2M I think San Jose could get behind this getting a first, more future financial flexibility, and a prospect who is older but great SHL player this season.
