Caufield has 48 pts in 77 games; Lafrenière has 52pts in 135 games.
While Habs should always consider bringing in Lafrenière to Mtl, they would not trade out a player who’s put up almost the same amount of points in half the time. The other deal would be to trade their Calgary 1st round pick, include their 2nd round pick, add Poehling or Evans to give them a 4th line depth player with another player like Hoffman, Dvorak, or Petry who are proven NHLers.
While some may take offense to this it gives NYR two picks, plus at least two NHL players to compensate any UFA that may leave in the off season.
I would be surprised if Caufield left… VERY surprised. They are mostly looking to get a player to bring some grit to that line, not take on a 1st overall that has yet to put up numbers. Not saying Alexis is a bust, no too soon for that, but right now, Stutzle, Lucas Raymond and Drysdale have all been looking far more promising than him. The NHL is never easy on 1st overall picks… No one predicted this but Lafrenière is currently not a high value.. NYR had no way of knowing this just like Mtl has no way of knowing how Shane Wright will turn out on the long term…
