Never said it was a bad pick, just that Oettinger would be way more beneficial than Yam for this year’s playoffs (vs Calgary). Plus Wallstedt would also help immensely with goaltending for the future.
Not saying either pick were bad, but IMO could’ve been better with their needs.
It is just dumb to me that people are say that we made a grave mistake not picking Oettinger, Yamamoto is a great player isn't not like we picked that 2 guys that went after Yamo who are still struggling to get consistent minutes in the NHL (POJ and Vesalainen). And don't forget that we also got our future starter in Skinner in 2017. and another note is in the 2017 offseason a goalie wasn't a priority for the Oilers because Talbot was suppose to be great.

the jury is still out on Bourgault
Fwiw DAL traded up for Oettinger specifically to get him in. Because they had an inkling on how good he'll be.
Basically everyone who missed out on him while picking in this region in that sense made a mistake, and that falls the most on teams with goaltending issues.

I mean, Yamamoto's ceiling looks like a 2nd liner, that's good however, Oettinger looks like someone who'd be a top 10 goalie in the league for years to come, that's not a hard choice when you look back

Assuming you can call Talbot a great goalie. He had couple of decent years and then he dropped off a cliff and Oilers didn't have any replacement options or young goalies in the books.

we got a NHL player that is not a pick that we shouldn't regret making, and don't forget that same Draft we got our future starter Stuart Skinner. also Yamamoto has looked fantastic under Woody

Talbot in 2017 was coming off a season in 2016-17 where he played 73 games and had a 0.919Sv% and got us to our first playoff appearance in over a decade and in those playoffs he had shutouts in the first 2 games, so Oilers front office was probably more concerned about getting wingers for McDavid then getting a goalie
Also to be fair both did turn out good just one happened sooner then the other
Campbell took 11 years, Ottinger 3.
While true, I'm pretty sure no one thinks Campbell's performance is worth a 11th overall pick, but people will definitely now think Otter's performance is worth 26th one.
