OEL is a legit top 4 d man. He’s been elite defensively and with top minutes, he will put up better offensive numbers. You don’t get those for free. OEL provides much more value to Vancouver than his 3.5 million dead cap. We’d be paying him 3.5 mil for 5 years to do nothing. He is still a good player. He had pretty good defensive numbers. We can negotiate retention, but there will be significant retention for an aging player with average offensive and defensive numbers and 5yrs left of his contract. Mind you, the only reason why I have any interest in him is to pair him with EK65, which is an experiment to say the least. SJ is taking the risk here, not VAN.
