I think you underestimate how good Schenn has played this season. Management thinks Dermott still has top 4 potential. It's not the strongest right side, but I think calling it weak is underselling it

Kapanen is in no position to ask for big money with the season he's had, plus he's got no favorable qualifying offer

NHL teams don't usually make multiple personnel trades with each other, it would be more efficient to talk over what assets and players each side is interested in from each other in one go
