Wright Chychrun Letang

Description
Run a 22 player team and they would not be over the cap. Although I assume Wright will have some potential performance bonuses that they will need to be cognizant about.

This team looks really good!

Letang goes home.
Dallas gets an upgrade at right D
Arizona gets Webers great contract (High Cap, low dollars owed) and take on Byron for the 1 year in exchange.
Arizona gets very good prospect in Guhle, Hoffman they can flip this year or next. 2 late firsts and 3 2nds for Chychrun. A lot of futures in this deal. Montreal gets a very good Dman signed for 3 more years.

As a Leaf fan, I am pumped Montreal won the 1st overall! This will be fun! :)

Thoughts on the team?

Webers Contract would actually be valuable to them. Cap hit over 7m a year but this next year they only pay him 3m in real dollars and only 1m a year for the next 3 years after that. So it would help them get to the cap floor while being way under that in terms of actual dollars. Arizona needs all the financial help right now. Byrons 1 year contract is the cost to get Webers contract.

Hope this makes sense!

That ARI trade could end up burning MTL pretty bad.
At least 2/5 of those picks could turn out to be very good players.

Guhle has not even played in the ahl yet (except 2 games, 2 years ago). It would be unwise to expect that he will be a top pair D man soon. Maybe in a few years! It could happen though.

This would be the cost for Chychrun in my mind.

And based on the team I create here, it may not be a bad call to do it!

Arizona should accept, Just for the picks alone, Letang will want at least $7,500,000 x 4 years if not slightly more.

Guhle plays next year, and in worst case in 2 years. Anyways don't you rather have

A top pairing D
or
A top pairing D future
2 A- prospects
A better chance at Connor Bedard

Hence why Arizona considers this package. Montreal considers it because they get a top pairing dman who is young, good value for 3 more years. Right now they have zero top pairing D. Getting him and Letang would be huge. (which I understand is very improbable to happen haha).

This would be fun if it happened though!

Depends on where the team is at. I think Montreal would be very good next year if all of this happened. Which is unlikely.

Montreal is not in a full tank mode. They were worse than they should have been this year because of terrible injury problems and a weird coaching situation.

They could be a good team next year with the pieces they have.

My comment would be that if Price isnt going to return, it doesnt make sense for MTL to make this all in move (Especially with how strong their division is.).
Wright will need 1-2 years of NHL experience to become a serious impact player to a team trying to make the playoffs.

What if MTL does this trade and doesnt make the playoffs the first 2 years?
Then you only have Chychrun for one year left...

yea we will see what Letang gets. This is the most I would pay for him. I think it's a contract that is good for player and team. And I would assume Montreal would be higher on the list of teams Letang would want to go to.

But I will always remind myself that teams like the San Jose Sharks are out there... And they will offer him 5 years x 8m a year... hahaha

yes for sure! I understand that. There is definite risk involved in the trade. But I don't see Montreal purposely trying to be bad. I can see them using their picks (outside of 1st overall) to upgrade their team. We will see what happens!

Also, they would need to make sure that Chychrun is happy, so that they have a high chance of resigning him. But a lot of things can happen in 3 years.

Montreal still has a lot of prospects and picks, even after giving up these 5 picks. They would still be set up very nicely for the future!

They're not going to pay for the honor of paying Weber's salary. Reduced salary or no, they'll still be on the hook for $6M in cash salary over the next 4 years. For a team that's playing in a 5000 seat arena for the next several seasons, that's no small ask.

I'm sure Arizona would be willing to take on his contract in a mutually beneficial trade, but Montreal would still need to compensate them for doing so.

The 3 2nds in the Chychrun trade is a little overkill. I think 0-1 should get it done.

I'd also scratch Savard for Barron. He's turned into a bottom 5 player in the league lately.

Other than that, I'm excited to see what this team can do.

I think Weber contract to Arizona is HIGHLY probable. So we will see what ends up happening. You could be right on Montreal having to pay. But I don't think so.

Arizona has to hit the cap floor somehow. I think getting Webers contract will save them a lot of money in the long term. Upwards of 4-6m a year for those last 3 years.

Even in year 1 they would get 10m + cap hit between him and Byron and only have to spend under 6m in real dollars.

Time will tell!

Yea d pairs can be adjusted. Leafs ran 8 D most of the year and people were in and out constantly. I can see similar happening here based on performance.

If you're broke, but you have to spend 62M every year, would you like to get a ticket saving you 4.8M first year, and 6.8M per year over the next 3 years?

They've done the same thing a number of times already for that reason exactly, and each time the team receiving cap relief has sent over not insignificant compensation (see Marian Hossa trade).

Weber is LTIR on Montreal meaning he is not cap relief for them. He will be IR on Arizona though meaning he will count towards the cap.

The benefits they get from Webers contract would be worth taking on the 1 year cap hit of Byron (which he is owed less money than his cap hit this year also).

Montreal has no reason or no need to get rid of Webers contract. They just use it as leverage to free up a bit of cap from Byron.

I think it's a deal that makes sense for both team. To be honest, if I were Montreal, I would say "if you want Webers contract, you take on 3 years of Armia."

But Byron + weber for nothing basically is fair in my mind.
