Quoting: Juiceman
Demko has only played 2 seasons as a starter. I’d be very shocked if he ends up peaking in his sophomore year as a starter. His 0.915 save % is very very impressive if you take a look at the defense in front of him. As you said, the Canucks have holes and defense is a big one. He is top 10 in the league in GSAx and I think has one of the highest, if not the highest even strength save % in the league. He is not overrated whatsoever. He’s honestly underrated as I haven’t heard anybody talk about him outside of Canucks fans. Given Jim Ruthford is Thatcher Demko’s biggest fan, I don’t see him being moved as long as he is alive. Trading a goalie at 26 due to being afraid he’s going to decline is pretty silly if you asked me. At the moment, the only big holes the Canucks need to fill is the defense and depth. For defense, we just need 2 top 4 guys. Schenn has been playing pretty good but ideally we don’t have Schenn, Myers, and Poolman as our RHD. With Miller, Boeser, and Garland, I’m sure we could acquire the assets to fill that hole. The Canucks have their first pick this year. Idk what they will do with it but it immediately helps their prospect pipeline. Miller is also likely traded. His value is very high and can easily fetch us 3 very nice assets. Demko is the last thing we should consider moving
I agree that Demko is a great goalie (why would I suggest spending a 2nd overall for him if I didn't think this lol), but to be fair we only have one and a half year to look at in which he did perform admirably. But It's still a fact he doesn't have any accolades in terms of playoff success or personal awards. He has like 1 playoff win on his name against Vegas Golden Chokers in the bubble.
I don't suggest on trading him because they'd be "afraid of him starting decline." That is indeed silly.
What I'd suggest is capitalizing on that insane value he's got right now due to playing really well in a pretty challenging environment.
As you said, Nucks is about to retool regardless what happens, and it's more than likely that the next 2-3 years, possibly even more are going to be a struggle for them. How long Demko is going to carry them? Is Demko still a force to be reckoned with when he's 30+? He's signed for four more years, and at least half of that is going to be spent on VAN building their outlook. Is he willing to stay after his contract expires? These are not claims, but questions.
Pettersson and Hughes are the future of this team. But the difference between them and Demko is the fact that they're 23 and 22 respectively, while Demko's turning 27 this year. Demko is great, but does he fit your timeline? I would say no, and if VAN achieves nothing during his contract then it kind of proves my initial point of this being a chance VAN failed to use to actually build a consistent top team. VAN hasn't had one in ages.
