I was gonna say, what’s Shesty’s GSAX? If it’s only +4.82, I think Vejmelka did better against Toronto earlier this year (+4.98 iirc or something like that) but that’s still super impressive

Objectively speaking, Dallas' offensive game in this Game 1 was about as dry as Leafs' cup drought has been past 55 years.

Basically the Atacama desert, figuratively speaking.

Nah it was worse

55 years seems like a trip to the Kitchen compared to what I had to watch

When a game has one goal and the other team doesnt generate much

It makes for a long game

Well you're a Leafs fan, you're not used to this.

This is every other game in Bowness playbook.

Wait so this happens every other game....

If I had to watch that low offense hockey day in and day out I would go insane

Rally the Dallas fans its time to go Bowness hunting

Also give Kiviranta more ice time

You really haven't wondered why me and Eso consistently call Bowness about as bad as Ducharme with us still being a playoff team?

Every time I saw it Robertson or Pavelski would score

So I thought you were channeling goals through reverse psychology

Either way they did come close so channel it more for gm 2

That's why I said every other game. It it was every game, Robo, Hintz and Pavs would be topping the scoring stats league-wide.

There's usually two or three games where they go zero, and then there's that game where they score 2-4 points each.

Big W for the Flames. We took wayyyyy too many penalties (lots of weak ones, for both sides, I feel like the 1st period every call was fine, but only the Benn trip/Flames too many men shoulda been called in the 2nd), but luckily our PK was great, we limited the Stars to only 16 (!!) shots, and Markstrom was perfect.

I don’t even feel like the Stars got any quality chances. There was one shot that rang off the post, and a 2-on-1 where Pavelski passed to Hintz and he proceeded to miss by a mile, but other than that I wasn’t ever really scared of anything the Stats did. I think the Flames had the far better looks (Toffoli had a really dangerous opportunity where he was allowed to just walk in, Mangiapane’s one-timer from the high slot, and then Lindholm’s shot from almost the exact same spot both looked like they could go in, Coleman woulda had a goal if Heiskanen was stronger on his skates).

It was a very physical game, but I think that plays into the Flames’s hands. Every time Tkachuk, Coleman, Dube, Lucic, Lewis, and Ritchie were on the ice, they were chasing down defenders below the goal line and finishing every hit. Lindholm even threw a few big ones (he caught Klingberg big on the first shift, and Tkachuk followed that up by immediately laying out Lindell, great start to the series).

Tanev was superb in big minutes covering for Andersson. Overall just a really well played, physical, defensive clinic by the Flames. I don’t think I noticed the Stars top line hardly at all until the goalie was pulled (apart from the aforementioned 2-on-1 for Pavelski and Hintz). Glendening and Raffl were the most noticeable forwards for a while lol. Heiskanen looked really good though, I’m glad the Flames were able to rough him up a bit in the corners.

It woulda been nice to get some 5v5 offense going but we still outshot the Stars by a large margin (26-16 overall, and if my count is correct they only had 10 shots that weren’t on the power play this game, and 6 shots against on 5 power plays against is pretty solid if none of them are goals too).

Overall solid W. The only thing we need to do better is take less penalties. We take those.

This was a Triple OT playoff game. That's the difference. I watched that Yotes/Leafs game. Vejmelka was incredible. But, he never could've kept it up for an additional 45 mins.

I don’t think Vejmelka coulda kept it up much longer either. But I would argue it’s a pretty much equally impressive performance. The argument for Vejmelka is that he faced far more high danger chances in a shorter period of time, and it took the Penguins 6 periods and 83 shots to get Shesterkin to a similar GSAX number. The advantage for Shesterkin is that he maintained a high level of play through 6 periods. Edge might go to Vejmelka for the underdog W though (Rangers were favoured and lost).

That’s why something like Hoffman for Matheson would make sense. I think Montreal is short a top 4LD and top 4RD

Hell no, Matheson has more term that Hoffman and that’s simply delaying when we have a bad contract on the team, I do not trust him to keep this up for his contract duration

Lmao, Florida lost, welp, turns out Bob can cost them the series even if they’re so much better than the Caps and Domingue is now the Pens starter, oof, you may have won game 1 but life just got a lot harder

Caps Postgame Notes: Game 1, 4-2 Win vs Florida

Capitals came in with a different strategy and it worked wonders. Not sure how the defense became such a wall, but they barely let any dangerous chances happen. You can’t have a goaltending controversy if you simply don’t let shots in, brilliant strategy.

Wilson scores early on and then goes down the tunnel right after. I’m guessing he has a concussion, as he took a high stick right before. I hope the Capitals call up Protas instead of playing McMichael, as Protas fits Wilson’s role better.

Bob was quite good today, Caps had pressure for most of the game and Bob kept that from being a 6-2 game before any empty netters. Florida’s defense will have to shore itself up next game.

I say nice things about defense, but Vanecek looked rough in comparison. Bad guesswork on the Bennett goal, but I have to admit that I missed the Giroux goal as I miscalculated how long intermission would last and was playing MLB the Show when it started. Oops.

Strong game overall by Washington. They came out with an energy I hadn’t seen in a few games, and all 4 lines looked good today. Special commendation to the 4th line for holding the fort defensively, Larsson looks like the perfect compliment to Dowd and Hathaway.

Now they just have to keep this momentum up towards the next game, because Florida is going to come out swinging.
