Interesting for sure. The hinge of it would be if the Habs had the second overall or third overall. If they got second overall they don't touch this, they take Cooley and be happy, they get third overall they may do this and walk away with Wright and Nemec

Habs getting fleeced. The first OA pick would be Caufield and Edmonton second round pick. Caufield could still end up being as good as wright

The Habs probably don't touch this if they end up at 3 either.

ya thats a very easy no from montreal. They will take Cooley at 3 and not give up 3 of their betting young players in the process. The only way they would trade to get the 1st would be giving their first and plus an additional pick, otherwise it would make zero sense.

The only way the habs would trade up into the 1st pick would be if it was a pure pick trade or if it included someone who is more of a secondary piece. (so no suzuki caufield guhle romanov etc)

If they know cooley is there at 2 or 3 their appetite for moving up will be limited.

Montreal is NOT touching this no matter what pick we end up with. If we get 2nd we take Cooley if third we hope whoever gets 2nd takes Nemec and we get Cooley or we take Nemec! There is no logic to moving 3 premium assets for a guy who is not even projected to be elite. MAYBE if this was Bedard we MIGHT consider it but it is not! The ONLY player in that package we MIGHT consider moving for 1st this year is Primeau neither Caufield or Romanov would be moved straight up for 1st this year.

As an Habs fan, I'll pick 2nd or 3rd, because there's not much difference between position 1 to 10 in the draft. Anyone in the top 10 could become the best player in the draft.

I'm sorry but that's straight delusion. You wouldn't trade Romanov for first overall this year? That's just nonsense, a case can be made for Caufield but even then Wright is pretty much a sure fire 1A / 1B center. Wright will be a star, probably better then Suzuki. If it was Bedard we would be giving up Caufield and another top 10 pick to get him, and even then I don't know of a team takes it unless that pick is in the 4-6 range.

Dustin Brown is a third-liner this year, so we'll fill that vacancy next season from within (or possibly via free agency if Forsberg is interested).

Romanov and Guhle are the Habs future top 4 LHD, Romanov is already pushing Eddy down to number 2 LD. Trading any of our top young players (Romy, Zuke and Caufeild) straight up for Wright is not worth it. We can't weaken one position to fill another, IF we miss on Wright there are other options in the draft that are not only the next best player available but also fill a need as well. Cooley is not that much of a downgrade on Wright so trading up to 1st if he is still available makes no sense. Nemec and Jiricek Fill the need of a top 4 RHD if we miss out on both Wright and Cooley, if that happens there are FA's/trades that can be signed/made. We don't have to go weakening our future core the way we did with Drouin/Sergachev.

Top four LHD is a lot easier to replace then a top 2c, let alone Wright as that center who's floor is ROR and ceiling Draistle. Thinking that Romanov is even worth a top 10 pick this year is why Habs fans get called out for stupid trades on here all the time.

Wright's Ceiling is more in line with Suzuki's which is that of Bergeron, thinking that Wright will hit on one of the best players in the league is ridiculous. He is more likely to be a 70-80 point player than a 100+ player.

Right now he is tracking at a 60% chance of being a star, that's higher then Suzukis and many others before being drafted. You can under estimate him all you want but kids going to be really good. Even then though if he ends up being a two way 60pt that's still more valuable then Romy will ever be.

Oh I don't underestimate him, you overestimate him. Romy is already a top 4 dman at just 22, he may never put up points like Petry or many others but there is more to hockey than just putting up points. I hope we get Wright by virtue of winning the lottery but I am not down for moving young core players just to jump one or two spots.
