Just because Minnesota was dumb enough to give Alex Tuch away doesn’t mean Buffalo is. That’s what’s really funny, they literally just gave him away to Vegas. I know Jonas Brodin is really good, but is he that good?
1. If you look, Tuch wasn't traded to protect Brodin. We used our 3 defensive slots in the expansion draft on Brodin, Spurgeon, and Suter. He was traded to protect Dumba, Scandella (who was needed for the Foligno trade about a week later), and Staal by getting Vegas to select Haula. I was personally against the move at the time, not because of a love for Tuch, but because I wasn't a believer in Dumba long term since he was all shot and not much defensively. Since Dumba tore his pec in 2018, his slapshot is basically gone and his offense has gone down. The defensive blunders he was supposed to have grown out of still haven't gone away even though he's now about to turn 28 and has 518 regular season games to his name.
2. Yes, Brodin is that good. When paired with someone who isn't a liability defensively, he's able to add a fair amount of offense to his game in addition to his elite defense. Statistically, Brodin and Dumba together have a 54.73% xGF% and 54.03 SCF%, Brodin without Dumba has a 56.49% xGF% and 57.56% SCF%, and Dumba without Brodin has a 45.73% xGF% and 42.33 SCF%. In other words, Brodin does well with anyone, but Dumba is garbage without Brodin there to babysit him.
