Description
Another crack at how Guerin might try to navigate this team thought the first year of three tough dead cap years after the parise and suter buyouts. Welcome constructive comments as I don't have intimate knowledge of all prospects and salary cap situations of other teams. Some tough decisions are surely coming as Billy G can't roll out the same team next season given the $constraints.

I would be surprised if the Devils traded a good/decent prospect and pick 38 for a pending UFA. I also can’t imagine they would want to extend him as they’ve been pretty consistent in their search for players whose age lines up with Jack/Nico.

I think if there’s a trade between NJD and MIN, it’s Fiala or Talbot.

I probably don't. Would a deal have to rip the other way then? What in addition to Jost do you think would work? Wild would need to get rid of this salary (more for 2023-2024 as they won't be able to afford Jost, so compensation would have to be picks. Any realistic suggestion?

It’s a tough situation because in reality we wouldn’t trade him so it would likely have to be an overpayment. A guy like Fiala seems too steep of a cost for Minnesota but something like that. Maybe Hartman and a mid round pick but I don’t think Hartman is available from the Wild

Buffalo isn't trading Tuch.

NJ is pretty set on RHD and Severson is a UFA himself so Idk why they'd bother with that move, seems like the wrong team to trade Dumba to.

As a Jets fan I'd hope they wouldn't make that trade, would maybe send Vesalainen for Jost but Idk if its even worth using up the cap space they have on Jost, he's decent but they have other needs.

I can't see Winnipeg having much interest in Jost. As an average, left shot, bottom 6 winger he doesn't give Winnipeg anything they don't already have.

Just because Minnesota was dumb enough to give Alex Tuch away doesn’t mean Buffalo is. That’s what’s really funny, they literally just gave him away to Vegas. I know Jonas Brodin is really good, but is he that good?

1. If you look, Tuch wasn't traded to protect Brodin. We used our 3 defensive slots in the expansion draft on Brodin, Spurgeon, and Suter. He was traded to protect Dumba, Scandella (who was needed for the Foligno trade about a week later), and Staal by getting Vegas to select Haula. I was personally against the move at the time, not because of a love for Tuch, but because I wasn't a believer in Dumba long term since he was all shot and not much defensively. Since Dumba tore his pec in 2018, his slapshot is basically gone and his offense has gone down. The defensive blunders he was supposed to have grown out of still haven't gone away even though he's now about to turn 28 and has 518 regular season games to his name.

2. Yes, Brodin is that good. When paired with someone who isn't a liability defensively, he's able to add a fair amount of offense to his game in addition to his elite defense. Statistically, Brodin and Dumba together have a 54.73% xGF% and 54.03 SCF%, Brodin without Dumba has a 56.49% xGF% and 57.56% SCF%, and Dumba without Brodin has a 45.73% xGF% and 42.33 SCF%. In other words, Brodin does well with anyone, but Dumba is garbage without Brodin there to babysit him.

Quick...erase that response as we need someone to give a nice return in a trade this summer! smile. I agree with the shot dropoff, but am less pessimistic on his blunders reduction...I think he's actually become more consistently reliable than three years ago. But agree on how you recall this, and definitely how you view Brodin. I suspect that Vegas would have taken Dumba though as I think he was viewed as the more valuable player at that point, and Tuch would possibly still be a Wild player today. And I wouldn't have to have Buffalo fans saying I'm a fool for trying to trade for him in an online, imaginary, armchair GM forum.

2. We aren’t trading our ‘23 1st
3. Fiala is valuable but not that valuable. He’s an RFA looking for 7mil plus.

Perhaps I remembered incorrectly. I thought that Minnesota went with the protection scheme that allowed them to protect more defenders, but they still had more valued defensemen to protect than they were allowed to. You can correct me if I’m wrong, but I also think that Alex Tuch was exempt from the expansion draft at the time. Still, trading him is one of the worst blunders made by a team in that expansion draft. I would say that Anaheim handing over Shea Theodore so they could protect Sami Vatanen is a bigger blunder.

We definitely went the 7-3-1 route. We protected Parise (NMC), Koivu (NMC), Pominville (NMC), Coyle, Granlund, Niederreiter, and Zucker for forwards; Suter (NMC), Spurgeon, and Brodin for defensemen; and Dubnyk as our goalie. CapFriendly has the protection lists in their archive, if you ever want to check them out. They also have the Seattle lists saved on their own page.

You are correct that Tuch was exempt. He had 1 year of pro experience at the time of the draft. It was reported after the fact that we had offered Vegas (for various levels of compensation) a choice between Greenway, Kaprizov, and Tuch with them obviously settling on trading a 3rd for Tuch. At the time, Greenway had just finished his freshman year at BU and was about 10 months from signing. Kaprizov had just been traded to CSKA and had 1 more year on his contract (he signed an extension a couple months later). The KHL had also just changed their buyout rules making it basically impossible for him to come over before the end of his 3 year contract. At that point, many were questioning if we'd ever actually see him in North America. Granted, the return would have probably been a lot bigger for Kaprizov than just a 3rd, but after seeing his first 130 games, imagine handing him over to Vegas to protect Dumba. Think of how terrible that would have been.

Fair point. However, hindsight being 20/20 I’m sure that Minnesota fans wish they had offered Greenway instead. It’s really sort of a no win situation for Minnesota there, they’re all good players, excelling at different things. But if you had a crystal ball you would’ve seen that Kaprizov was a flashy star in the making, Alex Tuch is one of the Premier power forwards and leaders in the game now, and Greenway is a nice checking power forward but not the same value as the other two. It’s a reasonable rationalization that you didn’t make the worst possible choice, still not sure that it excuses you for making the mistake you did. But every team makes miss steps.
