I believe he's making the assumption that it's Shane Wright vs Sebastian Cossa. DET should 100% make that trade.

I know Detroit is high on Cossa but trading him for Wright is a no brainer. Detroit needs another high end center and they are much harder to come by then goalies. They can fill their goaltending need with another trade or through free agency.

I'm not disagreeing with this at all, just throwing out whose more important in Tampa, vasi or point? If yzerman views cossa as vasi and wright is going to be their 2 way 2C like point, which would be more important in yzermans eyes? Personally I'd lean towards making the deal for wright, but can see the argument for either side

So, I hear you. Yzerman drafted Vasi and he's really good and drafting talent in general. SO, if he thinks Wright is a bust...ok yes I fully expect him to NOT make that move, but goalie prospects are VERY hit or miss. Especially 1st round goalie prospects. Are we really expecting all of Wallstedt, Cossa, Askarov to be continuous Vezina caliber goalies?

I did a study about a year ago which went through ~20 years of goalie specific draft history and compared that to what round each starting goalie (or tandem) was drafted in. Last year there were more starting goalies drafted out of the 2nd round than the 1st round and (I'm going from memory here), but I believe there was a 1 goalie difference between starters from the 3rd round vs the 1st round. There's also a VERY high bust rate of goalies out of the 1st round. SO, while it's Yzerman were talking about and he is very good at his job. I would never draft a goalie in the 1st round. It's common to find quality goalies in rounds 2 - 5.

I mean let's look at right now. The top 10 goalies in save % (with 35 games played) only has (1) 1st round pick. It happens to be Vasi, but the other 9 starters were drafted in rounds 2+

If it comes down to Wright (or Cooley) vs. Cossa, I'm taking Wright all day.
Goalies can always be found in FA, top line centers not so much.
Besides, being able to roll Hughes - Hischier - Wright down the middle for the next 10 years is just to sweet an opportunity to pass up on.

Also, like others have echoed in the thread, Cossa, like most young goalies, are rarely a sure thing.
I really wouldn't want Devils to do that trade.
Nor would I want them to just throw Blackwood away for a late 2nd.

Trade a #9 pick for a goalie.
Don't trade a #1 pick for a goalie that hasnt gotten to NHL yet.

We traded up to get him for a reason and he projects to be our goalie of the next decade plus. Why would we trade that away?

If I had the top pick in this draft I'd try my hardest to trade it as well.

Very Interesting trade. It would be really rare for a top drafted prospect to be traded the following year. It would come down to how much of a sure thing Yzerman views Cossa vs Wright and how much a sure thing NJ thinks Cossa is.

Shane Wright isn't going to be available at 4. If it's a post lottery trade and the Devil's have the 1st overall pick, that's a different discussion.

my guy, please read before commenting.

"Devils with the Wright Sweepstakes. Since they have center depth already, they shop Wright for a goalie."

It doesn't say Devil's WIN the Wright sweepstakes. The way it's written read to me, that this is a lottery ticket trade, not a post lottery trade with an assured 1st overall.

I don't even know why I'm splitting hairs with you, unless the original poster clarifies, this is pointless.

you did not just bold a typo which is very clearly explained in the following sentence.

"Since they have center depth already, they shop Wright for a goalie."

My brother in christ, context clues please.

Devils aren't getting Shane Wright, And Detroit passes. If Cossa lives up to the hype he's going to be our franchise goalie.
