This is like the Hamonic trade, the Senators giving up an asset (3rd round pick) for a declining player with negative value, and a salary that is way higher than what they bring. Labanc has two years remaining at nearly 6 million in real dollars each year. Combined over the last three seasons, he has played at a 37 point pace.
Add in the trademark where Dorion swaps late picks for no reason other than to give up value, and I'd think this was a very well done satire.
Brannstrom has no value beyond maybe a late pick, but his inclusion in the trade makes it even more realistic. The Senators can claim they didn't lose Brannstrom for nothing, they lost him for a top 6 forward in Labanc. (Top 6 in the AHL, but shhhh)
Could Labanc bounce back with a change of scenery? Maybe. But no one is taking on 2 more years at nearly 6 million in real cash to find out.
If we're talking about Colin White for Kevin Labanc as a base, with the Senators throwing in Brannstrom and/or picks because White is owed more money, sure. Maybe Zaitsev or Murray for Labanc. Basically, a change of scenery of bad contracts. Not saying either of those should work for the Sharks.
The thing about Colin White, is that his buyout is really cheap. The Senators would be better off just pulling the trigger on that.
