Teams are not going to just give the Pens an out. They are stuck with a majority of these contracts and will likely need to start rebuilding. That is the way of the salary cap era. I don’t see them having money for both Malkin and Letang, and I don’t see a way to get young outside of trading players like Guentzel.

Yeah I mean thats a fair point. I don't think we're stuck with all of them, Kapanen Heinen are RFA's so they shouldn't be that tough, I'm sure Canucks would take Marino, but Carter and Zucker will be tough. Blows my mind we gave Carter an extension, not that he's bad but I think he's like 38 and we're nearing a rebuild. It's going to be a challenge, would've been easier trading pending UFA's at the deadline, but better to start then put it off.

Not to Detroit they could pick up Schmidt for a 3rd as well. Edvinsson will make the team out of camp and apparently Yzerman has been following Walman since college plus they picked up Juolevi off of waivers. With Oesterle and if they resign Staal which is looking likely they really don't need another Dman it would be nice but spending a 2nd for Pettersson just isn't necessary. Especially with a couple of prospects who will be ready for the 2023-24 season.

I think the Carter extension is an indicator that the front office doesn't see the window as closed just yet. They have to have confidence in being able to bring Malkin and Letang back.

There is clearly going to be a rebuild, but it looks like they're planning to do it at least 2 or 3 years from now - right?

Also - not to go all Billy Businessman, but I have to think another goal is to keep fans happy. Malkin and Letang being career Penguins, potential playoff runs for two more years - that's huge for ticket sales and extra revenue.

Leddy gets bashed a lot here at CapFriendly but if Detroit wasn't able to trade him I wouldn't have minded if Detroit resigned him. The Islanders traded him and haven't been the same team since but their fans are the first to bash Leddy and say how bad he is. With Pettersson I doubt Detroit makes the playoffs next season no there is no rush. I like Pettersson for a 3rd but I'm not sure Yzerman would target him most of the players he has brought in have been in their final season of their contract or maybe have a season left on their current deal. Pettersson has 3 left and i'm not sure he'd want him in case he wasn't a fit

I think it was premature to re-sign Carter. Especially when we need more youth in the lineup. I just think the goal should be to do what is best to win another cup. It would have made fans happy and boosted ticket sales bringing Fleury back, but they didn't do it last offseason. I just don't think the right approach is to say rebuild in x amount of years for the front office. They should go year by year, see how the playoffs shake out, and then determine because things can change quickly.

That's a fair assessment and I agree with a few of those points. You definitely have to take it as it comes and assess in real time. I was hoping the Carter contract would be a lower hit, but I do think he brings a lot to the team. Stanley Cup winner, playoff experience, position versatility, locker room leadership, blah blah blah. I know Pittsburgh isn't stocked with young prospects, but I bet the first year NHLers enjoy having a wiley vet in there to give em some atta boys.

Having said that, I think Pittsburgh's situation is unique in the sense that Crosby has 3 years left on his deal and he just secured his 17th straight PPG season. They owe it to him as much as anything to try to be competitive as long as he's there.

Also, you're right about Fleury, that would have made fans happy, but it would have cost them future assets, which by holding, help their approach towards the future. They can get him next year as a UFA if they really want him, I have a feeling he wants to end in Pittsburgh.

Carter for Wood
The Pens aren't going to trade Carter (short of major return) as he is one of the only actual leaders on the team (Crosby's lead by example doesn't work in reality). It is also why I don't think that they actually tried to trade Zucker either.

Marino, Kapanen, 3rd for 1st
That is basically troll level trade suggestion.

I agree that the lead by example approach can only go so far, there needs to be other players holding their team mates accountable. Thinking back on their championship teams there were always guys like that on the roster.

I think you're right that Carter and Zucker bring that element, maybe even Boyle too.

I like Boyle as the #12, but I don't think that there is much left in that tank. Not sure he would actually play much next year, therefore there is a need to keep that aspect brought by Carter and Zucker.
