both teams decline.
in terms of value to their teams, Dobson & Nylander are pretty close. Nylander might be the better player right now, but Dobson is only 21 and has taken a major leap this year to looking like a guy who could be top pair on a ton of teams.
Jumping to the bottom of the trade, then, Mrazek & 1st for a 4th is probably a fair value to dump him.
That leaves the following:
To TOR
Beauvillier
Varlamov (50% retained)
2023 2nd
To NYI
LIljegren
Knies
Robertson
Huge overpay for Toronto but also not a return that the a "win-now" Islanders team is going to want to make. For better or worse, they're going to want to upgrade with NHL players if they move a package like Beau/Dobson/Varlamov. Nylander obviously upgrades Beau, but Mrazek is a huge downgrade from Varlamov at this point. Liljegren might be worth a look but your best case scenario is that he reaches Dobson's level (which is hard to anticipate since he's behind him now and is a year older than Noah.) Knies & Robertson will probably turn out to be good players, but one look at Oliver Wahlstrom's development should tell you that it may take a few years to happen - between management's insistence on bringing prospects along slowly, added to the lack of open forward spots because most of the core being signed through 2023-24, and you begin to see the very real possibility that Knies & Robertson wouldn't be consistent contributors to the Islanders for 3-4 years. Not saying I agree with that kind of philosophy, but just paying attention to how things are run with this GM/coach combo makes it a very possible scenario.
