Ugly as in bad for both parties? It opens up some sizeable cap for Calgary to resign Gaudreau and Tkachuk
Well, I've always been a Toews hater, so there's that for starters.
Then there's just so much money moving back and forth where 3 of the worst contracts in the entire league this year are involved. Then there's Valimaki and the picks that are basically compensation for the money involved.
From a money perspective...
- CHI takes on an extra $6.375M from Monahan's cap hit (as Lucic's cap + 50% retention on Toews = 100% of Toews).
- CGY gets $6.375M in cap space and a very slight upgrade over Monahan in Toews while opening up Lucic's roster spot. They pay the 1st/2nd/Valimaki to do so.
Fortunately for everybody involved, all 3 of these atrocious contracts die after the 22-23 season.
Rationally speaking, this is all probably quite fair, and maybe even clever. Toews is a slight upgrade over Monahan right now, so that's probably worth a second and/or Valimaki. Then the extra piece(s) compensate for CHI's help with CGY's cap situation.
