Description
*Kent Hughes & Jeff Gorton's top priority this offseason is to shed contracts as part of their 2-year 'reset'. We have confirmed reports from back in Dec 2021 that Jeff Petry has requested a trade. As well, the Habs intend on moving Weber's contract with Arizona as a likely LTIR suitor. For all Canadiens players with lengthy, high cap contracts (Petry/Weber/Price) it's unlikely the Canadiens will get much fair value on these players. The focus is too make these contracts disappear and for this team to get younger.

**For Carey Price, the most likely outcome this off-season is he's likely 100% healthy by May/June. As well, taking into consideration that the Habs are going through a 'reset' over the next 2 seasons, it's very likely that Carey Price will request a trade this off-season. A 2-team trade will probably result in the Habs retaining half of Price's contract (5.25/yr for 4 yrs) which the Habs will not pursue. Only likely trade imo is a 3-way deal that includes Arizona. Only other possible suitors for Price (at 6 mill/yr) are Seattle and Colorado .... but for me it's Detroit. And to be fair, a 100% Carey Price in 2022 is better than Nedeljkovic in 2022.

***Jeff Petry's family lives in Detroit and he's from Ann Arbor. The Red Wings will likely depart with DeKeyser and Staal which leaves tonnes of cap room for Detroit to entertain a healthy Carey Price and Jeff Petry on their roster this off-season.

what no

maybe in a cap dump but there's no way the Wings should part with two young pieces for Price and Petry

You forgot to include your first round pick and more in that Detroit trade.
You also basically gave nothing to Arizona. Harris said can be signed as a free agent. Hoffman is not desirable. They don't want Weber's contract for 4 years. Maybe if it was 1 or 2. You would also need to pay like 2 firsts for Arizona to retain on price.

There's still no certainty Price will be playing next year depending on how his knee feels after a few games and if hes healthy theres not much benefit in trading him we have plenty of candidates to move to shed salary and if price still has a few years left in him i would keep him and let primeau be his back up for a year or two.

Detroit is a likely spot for Petry but from hughes' presser yesterday seems like teams view his contract as a burden and would need compensation to take the full contract on. I wouldnt bank on getting much in that return if anything, which is fine cuz by this offseason the habs will just have to get him out and move on regardless of what the market is for him.

Also dont need to be losing Harris as a throw to shed some of price's salary, can use some of our picks to get rid of Hoffman, Byron and Drouin as needed.

No one is taking a goalie who hasn't played. Even retained he's over 5 million. You want price gone its going go cost real assets to move him. All those d that Detroit is losing are ld, petry is a right where at the moment we don't need help.

Price said this year he doesnt plan on waiving his NMC again after the Expansion Draft last year put a lot of stress on his family
Angela Price in particular was very vocal about her anxiety around it as she's in Fashion and outside New York there's no better market for her to have he shop in
He'll retire and make us pay him with signing bonus's while taking the cap hit
He knows he's 100% in control hence his level of effort to return vs before he got this deal
When he was injured before requiring surgery he worked non stop to be ready because he had not choice MTL's backups sucked
This time around he's got 100% guaranteed money and 2 solid back up choices

Petry you can move no issue
But Price wont move and hurt his wife or family who call Montreal home
Its where his kids were born and raised . Its where Angela built her passion into a Business
Even when he retire's i dont think he'll move but continue is summers in BC with the rest of the year in MTL
Unlike Roy his Legacy wont be about him leaving but instead about him staying

After seeing Hughes moves so far
Would you choose to leave a team he's building ?
I know i wouldnt and if im Petry i retract my request knowing Barron is here

There is
Hughes confirmed it yestarday saying he'll be returning this year not he may be but he will be
He said he had to make roster moves for his goalies soon to accomodate anyways and thought Hammond earned the right to play in the NHL so he traded him

We didnt move a 3-0 Goalie for no reason
We had a good 3 goalie rotation going like CAR last year

The comments about Petry he said we wouldnt get what he considers a good return and that he wouldnt take a loss to make it happen.
I dont know where you heard that we got to pay to move him
He's been clear he'd like to help his family out but politely said more or less thats not his priority or problem
That Petry signed a Contract and could end up playing it out in MTL
To be fair under MSL Petry seems happy so i think those comments were more about him saying "we're seeing how this year goes"
If Canada becomes the last country to finally let people leave then he might even want to stay
He always traveled back and forth freely and these restrictions saw him miss the birth of a child which is when he request the trade or shortly after anyways
I think Hughes gets that

He confimed price will be getting into games soon yes. But still no certainty that his knee is good to go until he pushes it fully in a game or that he will bounce back to the goalie he was in the playoffs last year, thats the uncertainty piece.

Actually Edmundston confirmed Price's Knee and lateral movement looked the stronges the's seen them
Given he cleared creases with Chiarot all the way to a SCF i think that's a qualified person to weigh in

I think the real test here is can MTL send the Message that if you even look like you're gonna run Price then we gotta fight period
Its not the time to let him take to many shots

Just because he may be healthy now as i argue
Doesnt mean i think he'll keep rebounding from injuries as each time it takes him longer
Its time to find that guy and lucky for us our team has him in Junior right now as a 21 year old for seasoning
Arber Xhekaj earned a deal off an invite and was one of the final cuts with Ghule
He's one of the people who really took advantage of the Pandemic and his size/physicality is scary
He reminds me of Weber in many ways but at the same time he's more about sending messages like Wilson
He'll warn you then he'll knock you out if a few big Romanov level hits arent enough

He was Physically ready at camp its why we signed him
But as far as the rest of his game it was all very generic
Good but not great , Close but not close enough
Like Suzuki did as a 21 year old in Junior Xhekaj has thrived
He broke his previous career highs in the first 18 games
They traded him to the #1 OHL team after that where he's a key force for them

If they go on a Memorial Cup Run it could be as epic as Suzuki's with Mctavish, Winterton and Mysak on Offense elevating all the non NHL forwards play
Xhekaj has just done a great job protecting the goalies and on special teams
