Ode to MAF:

On the ruins of freezy Babylon
King Billy Guerin sat
Wanting to build an Empire
To capture a Holy Grail

He asked the Gods of the fire
How in the world I can
Defeat the people of mountains
Win over arch city men

The Gods responded him calmly:
You gotta meet one of us
In the city of winds and hockey
Playing in goal for the Hawks

The old king started his journey
Equipped with a second round pick
Reached the good ole Chicago
Found there the goal god Fleury

He said: o the almighty
Please show me light,
Come to my ruined empire
And kick mediocrity out

The old God responded shortly
I ll do it but for a steep price
For a couple of cans of Surly
And a steak dinner at Mike’s

And now he is headed forward
To the land of the lakes and ice
Where the snow is so white and silky
Where the people re so patient and nice

Let’s hope that he s successful
In kicking mediocrity out
That he is never out after 9PM
In the neighborhood of Dinkytown

And if we are winning a cup this year
There will be a follow up
Thank you for your attention
Wish you success and love

Written at the University of Minnesota Fluid Mechanics Lab while running another buggy computer program God why did you let people invent them they are ruining my life.

Chicago fans here were demanding much, much more.

Not really. I only had more when Cap Dumps were heading back to CHI. They still have an outside chance at a 1st even with zero cap dumps heading to CHI. Pretty fair deal to me. I heard a MIN fan suggest that asking for a 1st round pick was an unstoppable force vs an unmovable object. Pretty spot on it you ask me and they meet in the middle. Conditions to a 1st such that MAF warrants a 1st. MAF had 100% of the control too.

This is actually the funniest thing about this entire scenario.

Chicago got Fleury for nothing, Vegas wasted the cap space, and now Chicago is moving Fleury for what could be a first.

Flawless asset management by McCrimmon.

While I believe on the surface this looks like a fair deal, but I believe Chicago needs to get a C grade here.
I believe if they managed things better, they should have been able to get more for fluery when the salary is retained.
I recognize they got him for nothing and flipped him for a second, but I think they should have gotten more in return for retaining 3.5 million of salary.
The player alone should have gotten more I believe.

im just amazed at how many people arent voting for the Hawks... thye literally turned nothing into something. Wild def benefit but as to who wins? how could Chi not be the winners... they got a 2nd MAYBE 1st for getting a starting goalie for free..

trading your budding goaltender so that you can make room for a 37 y/o journeyman goalie who already has plenty of achievements under his belt for a predictably fleeting playoff run whilst giving up a second round pick to get him? am i the only one that thinks this is a bad idea?

I suspected this was exactly what Chicago had in mind when they acquired him (unless they thought they actually had a contending team going into this season), basically paying $6M cash (minus whatever Minnesota’s share is for the rest of the season) to turn Hakkarainen into a 1st or 2nd round draft pick and the joy of watching a hall of fame goalie play for them for ¾ of a season, so they get a win for completing execution of the plan. But with so many of the playoff teams apparently in need of goaltending help and the prices paid for other rentals, I’m surprised they weren’t able to get more. Of all the players that were available, I think he’s the one most likely to be a difference maker, so Minnesota gets a big win for that.

I see them as two separate transactions, because they didn't need to move Kahkonen to get Fleury. He's waivers exempt so they could have just sent him to the minors.

i guess the only way that this makes sense is if guerin is really betting on wallstedt becoming an elite goalie
